Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Ending Being Written As Potential Series Finale

Grey’s Anatomy might be coming to an end after seventeen seasons. The current season finale is being written as a potential series finale.

It was a medical drama which was created by Shonda Rhimes and is currently in the seventeenth season. The show has incorporated the current pandemic into its storyline beautifully. It is also because of the pandemic that the show has only 16 episodes instead of its usual 24 episodes.

Grey’s Anatomy is already halfway through as the show is coming back today after a three-month-hiatus. The show’s midseason premiere will be crossing over with the storyline of Station 19. It has already aired six episodes and is in production for future episodes with a finale date that might be around May.

The show continues to be one of the most successful television shows ever and has welcomed a new audience when it hit Netflix. it continues to attract its audience as well as new viewers and is the number one primetime drama on ABC. Ellen Pompeo, the show’s lead actor had revealed that the season might be the last as she informed that she is at the end of her two-season deal.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, there have been no new deals made yet and the finale is getting closer. Krista Vernoff is planning to write the last episode of this season to serve as a season finale and as a series finale. The new negotiations for renewal have been in discussion for months with ABC Signature and Disney.

Because of no official decision being made, Krista is forced to plan storylines that will provide satisfaction to the fans regardless of the decision that will be made eventually. The showrunner has requested ABC to let her know their final decision ahead of production.

“I’ve got plans for both contingencies.”

She said, “I’m planning a season and a finale that could function as either a season finale or a series finale. I’m planning for both contingencies and it’s hard and it’s not ideal. It’s not where I wish we were.”

The showrunner added, “I’ve told them that I have to know before I’m making the finale what we’re making because there are a couple of character threads that will change. I’ve got plans for both contingencies. Either there will be closure or I will build something in that allows me to have a bit of a cliffhanger and a thread for next season.”

Although it has been a tough place to be as a showrunner, Krista already has plans for either of the two things. Grey’s Anatomy has been a successful show from the start and the ending has not been dependant on the ratings. It has always been to creative decisions and contracts negotiations.

Shonda had revealed that the show will end when Ellen does not want to continue anymore. The actress’s two-year deal made her the highest-paid actress for a television series. Grey’s has always had Ellen’s character as a constant from the very beginning. But we know that if she wasn’t Meredith the show would not go on as long as it has.

Grey’s Anatomy deserves a satisfying ending even if it is the end forever. Ellen Pompeo had indicated that this year might be the last for Grey’s Anatomy as it enters its 17th season.

The actress had advised us that to brace ourselves. This will also be the final year of her contract as the star and the producer of the show. In her recent interview with Variety, the actress reveals that they don’t know when the show will be ending. However, she also shared that this year could be it.

She said that she is constantly fighting for the show as a whole, to be as good as it can be. Ellen explained, “As a producer, I feel like I have permission to be able to do that. I mean, this is the last year of my contract right now. I don’t know that this is the last year, but it could very well be.”
