Game of Thrones Prequel House of the Dragon Begins Casting

Entertainment Weekly revealed that the casting for Game of Thrones prequel has begun.

The show by HBO is expected to be released by 2022. It will have the reign of the Tagaryen family in the Seven kingdoms. The show is from 300 years before the hit fantasy series.

There was no information on who had been selected amid the news of the casting. Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik will be at the helm of the series according to the publication show. The duo has directed one of the most famous episodes of the show, Battle of the Bastards.

HBO has signed off on the show to be a 10 episode season. It is also reported that Condal and Sapochnik will be behind the director’s chair for the first episode.

Although the casting of the show is under wraps, the source revealed some other information about the prequel. It is reported that Dance of the Dragons, the civil war between the Targaryens will also be inclusive in the show. However, it is not clear at which specific point will they incorporate the storyline.

House of the Dragons was one of the five projects HBO was developing. The network handed out a straight to series order for the prequel. The initial project, Game of Thrones, was written by Bryan Cogman. Meanwhile, according to an entertainment portal, the prequel is a new take on the show. It is written by Colony creator Ryan Condal.

The show will be based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, released in 2018. It is a companion book of the original series which is about the history of the Targaryens. House Targaryen ruled over Westeros for 300 years, before Robert’s Rebellion ended their reign.

Spoiler Alert! In the series, Emilia Clarke’s character was believed to be the last of the Targaryens. Until it was revealed that Jon Snow’s real parents were Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. This made his character the true heir of the Throne.

HBO had commissioned five pilots from different writers, as it was heading towards the final seasons. However, only House of the Dragon moved ahead to be a series. The network did order another pilot set 8,000 years ago before George R. R. Martin’s books. It was an untitled project which would have been the spin-off of Game of Thrones.

That pilot starred Naomi Watts, Miranda Richardson and Jamie Campbell Bower, among many others. It was written by Jane Goldman and directed by S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders). However, the network passed on bringing it to series.

Goldman was commended by Bloys but it needed far more invention since it was set before the original books. Bloys said it was ‘beautifully’ building the world of the show. ‘One of the benefits of House of the Dragon is there was a text from George and there was a little bit more of a roadmap,’ Bloys added.

He further said that Goldman’s prequel had more challenges in establishing the world. But however, he claims she handled it beautifully and that there wasn’t any glaring thing.
