Netflix has expressed ambitions to adapt Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina into a new series that will be classified as first ever Russian Netflix Original on the platform.
Fully filmed in Russian, Anna K will be the modern narrative of an old story by Leo Tolstoy. Svetlana Khodchenkova will play a pivotal role in the project.
Who Is The Writer?
Roman Kantor is the author of the Russian hit series To The Lake that plays on Netflix around the world. He is the same guy who will cover the modern adaption of Anna K.
Kantor will also be seen as a directing assistant alongside Valeriy Fedorovich, Evgeniy Nikishov, Natasha Merkulova and Aleksey Chupov.
‘Proud And Excited’
Netflix’s Anna K will be produced by 1-2-3 Entertainment. They also produced The Lake:
“We are very proud to be part of the first Netflix projects in Russia – it is a great honor and a great work. To rephrase the famous quote, it is a small step for our company, but a huge step for the whole industry”, said the company.
The director of Netflix Original series Michael Azzolino also shared his excitement about the project in an official statement:
He said “We are incredibly proud to announce our first Russian series with 1-2-3 Production. The talented team of writers, directors, and producers have crafted an imaginative and immersive series. We are excited to help bring their vision for this much-admired story to our members in Russia and the world.”
Storyline And Plot

The novel has seen countless adaptions over the years in films, TV, radio, ballet and opera. This is the reason why it is considered one of the most beautiful novels written by many writers to this day.
As reported by THR, in a revised version of Netflix, Anna Karenina is a socialite and the wife of the soon-to-be governor of St. Louis. who enters a life-changing love affair with Vronsky, the dashing heir of an aluminum empire. Their affair threatens the delicate balance of their familial bonds and social relationships.
No release date has been announced yet for Anna K.
