The latest Fast and Furious movie in the franchise had made an estimated $ 70m (£ 50m) over the first weekend when it was released to the public in the US and Canada.
It means that Fast & Furious 9 – released as F9: Fast Saga in North America – is the most successful film in the world to be released since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fast And Furious 9, which was already playing in many overseas locations, has now collected more than $ 400m (£ 287m) worldwide.
It was one of many films whose 2020 scheduled release date was delayed.
Others include James Bond’s film No Time To Die, now due in September.
With Vin Diesel in the lead role, F9 is the tenth sequel in the series that commenced in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious.
The latest sequel pits Diesel’s Dominic Toretto role and his estranged criminal brother, played by John Cena.
Charlize Theron, Cardi B and Dame Helen Mirren also appeared in the movie on scenes that were shot in Edinburgh in 2019.
Cena told the BBC this month the Scottish capital was a great location “to destroy” during the film’s frenetic action sequences
Fast & Furious 9 left its competition far away with its weekend numbers to comfort the hottest movie theater owners in North America.
Quiet Place Part II grossed an estimated $ 6.2m (£ 4.4m) between Friday and Sunday, grossing US and Canadian at $ 136m total.
The F9 opened on Thursday in the UK and Ireland where the theaters are now working with COVID restrictions in place.
Despite the restrictions, Justin Lin’s film reportedly made more than £ 1m on its first release day.
