Fans Afraid For NCT 127 As They Will Host SNL Korea Reboot

When it was announced that the OTT platform Coupang Play and Ace Story would be rebooting Saturday Night Live Korea, it got a lukewarm response. The show is the spin-off of the American comedy show, SNL.

However, when it was confirmed that Red Velvet’s Wendy will be a part of the show, there was an uproar among fans of Revelus (Red Velvet’s fandom). Now, fans are not happy that NCT 127 have been signed in as the first idol guest host for the SNL Korea reboot.

SM Entertainment had booked NCT 127 for the SNL Korea reboot which was confirmed by Korean news agencies on September 23. Few fans were happy for the band but some of them showed their disappointment; and the research that Revelus had done surfaced. Fans are unhappy that SM is booking their artists on problematic shows.

The show SNL Korea was first produced by tvN but was forcefully ended after serious allegations were made against them. The controversies surrounding it included the female crewmembers sexually harassing boy bands; making racist jokes and mocking a breast cancer survivor. They did apologize but continued their inappropriate behaviour even after that.

The crew claimed it was all fun and games but viewers had enough of them. Their ratings began to fall which is when it was cancelled. Many of the viewers thought that the reboot will be different with different cast members; but they do include familiar faces who were accomplices to the misbehaviour of their cast members.

Fans Express Their Displeasure With SNL Korea & SM

Some of them are Shin Dong-yup, Jung Sang-hoon, Ahn Young-mi, Kim Min-kyo and Kwon Hyuk-soo. The reboot includes new cast members too namely, Lee Byung-hun, Ha Ji-won, Jessi and Jo Jung-suk. Their production has promised that they will not follow the steps of the original show but fans are not convinced. They are concerned that the name of the show will ruin the reputation of NCT 127 and Wendy.

Initially, fans were congratulating NCT 127 for their debut on the SNL Korea reboot. However, negative responses soon started overshadowing the positive as fans became concerned. Some tweeted, “Snl korea is problematic and the jokes are sometimes too mature; why they choose to send nct127 there at the first place; when the boys are more than willing to appear on knowing brothers”. One NCTzen commented, “I don’t know why this snl korea with nct 127 worries me too much, it doesn’t feel right to me.”

The ‘SNL Korea’ reboot is set to air every Saturday from September 25 at 10 pm KST (9 am ET) on Coupang Play.
