Director Chloe Zhao has confirmed the runtime for Marvel’s highly-anticipated film, Eternals. The movie revolves around an alien race that emerges from hiding to save Earth from its evil counterparts.
These evil people are Deviants. The movie is based on Marvel Comics with the same name. Eternals is set after events of 2019’s Endgame where we saw the Avengers reverse Thanos’ snap. This sparked the creation of something known as the “emergence” that endangers humanity.
As you are aware, the cast of Eternals is pretty impressive and new for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The ensemble includes actors like Angelina Jolie, Kit Harrington, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Don Lee, Kumail Nanjiani, Harish Patil, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, and Brian Tyree Henry. Every actor will be playing one of the possibly immortal members of the alien race. I say possibly because we are not aware if Marvel will incorporate the immortal aspect from the comics.
Eternals are created by Celestials and have lived on Earth for 7,000 years. The movie is surely shaping up to be a long one because of the ensemble and the long time that it is dealing with. Chloe sat down with Fandango to talk about her upcoming Marvel movie. She confirmed that the film’s runtime will be two-and-a-half hours which will make it one of the longest MCU movies yet.
Eternals Will Become One Of The Longest MCU Movie After Endgame
The director also explained that the long run-time is intentional and that it could be longer. She shared, “You know, itâs ten characters, the Celestials and 7,000 years. Thereâs a lot going on”. For perspective, the shortest movie in the MCU to date is tied between 2013’s Thor: The Dark World and 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Both the movies are around 112 minutes while 2011’s Thor is a close second as it is 115 minutes long.
The longest movie in the MCU is understandably 2019’s Avengers: Endgame which runs for 181 minutes. And the second-longest would be Avengers: The Infinity War which is again understandable as it runs for 149 minutes. Eternals runtime is behind Endgame but easily takes the second spot after it premieres.
But like Infinity War and Endgame, Zhao’s Eternals deals with an ensemble cast which makes sense for it to have a long run-time. Fans sat through Endgame pretty easily so they will have no problem sitting with the Eternals and the two-and-a-half-hour run-time or longer movie.
