Dune 2 is expected to start filming in July 2022
Dune: Part 2 is set to begin filming in July 2022, well ahead of the film’s scheduled to release in 2023. Only a few weeks ago, Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s renowned sci-fi novel Dune premiered in cinemas and on HBO Max, and it has quickly proven to be the adaptation fans have been waiting for.
Timothée Chalamet stars alongside Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Zendaya as Paul Atreides, the chosen one. Dune had a strong $41 million opening weekend and has made $330.4 million worldwide as of this writing.

Villeneuve’s Dune was famous even before it premiered because of his decision to divide the heavy novel into two parts. Villeneuve noted that he wanted to be able to fully explore the vast world Herbert created, which has proven to be difficult for prior adaptations to handle.
When the first film was released, Dune: Part 2 wasn’t a given, but great reviews, strong box office numbers, and strong streaming success paved the door for a greenlight just days later. Dune: Part 2 will be released in theatres in October 2023, according to Warner Bros., much to the pleasure of fans.
Even though two years seems like a long time when compared to other big-screen franchises, it isn’t that far away. The fact that Dune’s creative team has already set a production start date makes things much better. One of Dune’s producers revealed at a Q&A session, according to journalist Josh Encinias, that Part 2 will begin filming on July 18, 2022. If shooting lasts until late 2022, Villeneuve and his team should have plenty of time to finish the film before October 2023.
Although Warner Bros. refused to allow Dune: Part 1 and Part 2 to be shot concurrently, Villeneuve didn’t sit about waiting for the sequel to be permitted.
Villeneuve revealed earlier this year that he was working on the Dune: Part 2 script, and while it isn’t finished yet, the creative team must be confident that it will be finished by the middle of next year. As additional characters are introduced, there will most certainly be casting announcements in the coming months.
