Cruella 2 Reportedly In Development At Disney

A sequel to the recently released Cruella is in development at Disney. Cruella opened in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access service. The venture came in second at the box office behind Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Part II. However, it still opened with strong numbers given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

There were various individuals involved with Cruella who discussed about a potential sequel leading up to the film’s release. The Cruella De Vil in the 1996 live-action adaptation of 101 Dalmations, Glenn Close, pitched a Godfather Part II-style sequel involving herself and Emma Stone. She is also credited as an executive producer on Cruella.

Craig Gillespie, the director also spoke about the same and his thoughts and interest in returning. Seems like the creators already had a sequel in mind because of all these discussions. However, the main question was if the sequel will be profitable enough to justify the film. And the answer to that question is yes.

Disney is satisfied with Cruella’s box-office and the reception it had received because they are in development on a sequel. As per reports, Craig and writer Tony McNamara are expected to return to the sequel. A Disney spokesperson released a statement as well regarding how well Cruella had done for them.

The statement reads, “We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date…The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

The plan is to turn these properties into long-running franchises similar to Marvel or Star Wars. When it comes to Disney live-action remakes, both Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent got their sequels. However, both the sequels to the movies underperformed at the box office and were not as popular with critics either. Recently, Disney has also announced a sequel/prequel to 2019’s The Lion King. The venture was directed by Barry Jenkins. There will also be a sequel to 2019’s Aladdin.

Cruella ends with the traditional set up of 101 Dalmations. So this means that the filmmakers could stick to the straightforward remake of the classic story, However, they could also create the project from Cruella’s perspective. There is also the possibility of showing Cruella dealing with the ever-evolving world of fashion. Anything is possible for the filmmakers to explore as they can have a free rein to take the property to another direction.
