Bindi Irwin recently revealed that she celebrated her honeymoon at the sprawling premises of their Australia Zoo amid the coronavirus pandemic. On March 25, Bindi Irwin wed her long-time partner Chandler Powell during a secret ceremony at Australia Zoo.
Due to the pandemic in Australia, the couple was forced to scrap their dream wedding for a small, private ceremony with no guests except for Bindi’s mom, Terri Irwin, and brother, Robert Irwin.
But that’s not all. The newlyweds were even forced to cancel their honeymoon in March as the pandemic threatened their family financially. Their honeymoon plans of taking a road trip around Australia, has been put on hold indefinitely for now in order to take care of the family’s Australia Zoo. Which was started by Bindi’s late father, Steve Irwin aka “The Crocodile Hunter”.
Bindi and Chandler stayed at the zoo during the pandemic, as they helped look after the animals and manage the $400,000 weekly payroll crisis. “Our honeymoon certainly wasn’t what we had originally planned,” she explained. “It was an incredibly stressful time as Australia Zoo was flung into lockdown. We had no idea if or when our doors would be open again.
“We spent our honeymoon doing our best to care for our animals and zoo team hoping that things would get brighter.” With no guests and a reduced staff at the Australia Zoo, Bindi and Chandler spend the majority of their would-be honeymoon cleaning up after tortoises, feeding koalas and meerkats. Not to forget, “sun-bathing” with lemurs.
‘Our first few months of marriage have been a whirlwind to say the least,’ Bindi added. However, she went on to say that she couldn’t think of a better time to get married then when she did. “It feels so much better to tackle the world together as husband and wife.”
“It’s not the most romantic honeymoon in history, but it’s our honeymoon,”the 21 year old said cheerfully. “This is probably the busiest honeymoon in history, along with the weirdest honeymoon ever,” her husband, Chandler adds.
Chandler however has a thoughtful surprise for his new bride. Wanting to “do something more honeymoon-ish and less poop-scooping.” Chandler decides to surprise Bindi with a romantic picnic at the zoo, overlooking a grassy field where rhinos graze.
“You have been working so hard on what was supposed to be our honeymoon. So I would say you’ve earned a little honeymoon break 10 times over.” Chandler tells a tearful Bindi as they arrive at the idyllic private picnic he set up, complete with pillows and a bottle of bubbly.
“It’s so nice to get a moment like this to revel in being married,” Bindi says. “I don’t think we’ve gotten a chance to stop and think about it. I just want to mentally capture this moment and hold onto it when the world continues to turn upside down.”
But the lovebirds’ charming getaway doesn’t last long. At one point, brother Robert crashes their picnic, playing ukulele and helping himself to hors d’oeuvres.
“You know what every bride wants after she gets married? To celebrate her honeymoon with her brother on a romantic picnic the first time we’ve been alone in the last month,” Bindi jokes.
In an Animal Planet special set to air in August, titled, Crikey! It’s the Irwins: Life in Lockdown, the family will discuss how they handled the zoo during the lockdown.
“This was always Steve’s passion,” Terri Irwin says at the start of the Animal Planet special. “Steve would always say to me, ‘If anything happens to me, make sure the zoo continues’.”
