The Story Behind Zendaya’s Outfit At Essence Black Women Hollywood Awards

Zendaya resembles power as she dons her exaggerated shoulder silhouette. The outfit that she wore for Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood Awards stole many hearts.

However, what made the outfit special was the actress’s vintage blue-gray YSL top and slit maxi skirt. The story behind this  one is more striking . Law Roach, the celebrity stylist and image architect revealed that Zendaya’s top was originally a dress that was owned by Eunice Walker Johnson.

She was a late Black businesswoman who changed fashion for Black women back in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The stylist started the Ebony fashion fair which is a global fashion tour that shows Haute couture fashion. She highlighted Black models and designs on her way to success.

Eunice had worn the silk dress along with the sleek black maxi skirt just like Zendaya. This was for an old issue of Ebony as shared on his Instagram. The 1982 piece is from the stylist’s personal archive. “We pay homage ????????????,” he wrote.

Zendaya was being honored for her contributions to Hollywood and global culture. She was honored along with Whoopi, Goldebery, Cynthia Erivo, Michaela Coel, and Andra Day.

In a typical Oscar week, Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood Awards is a star-studded, tears-and-laughter packed, invitation-only luncheon celebrating the industry’s Black female talent. This year, Essence’s 14th time hosting the event, called for a more pandemic friendly, virtual approach, albeit one that still packed plenty of emotion.

The event featured a pre-show hosted by Storm Reid, who will also host Essence Hollywood House, a series of discussions with Black creatives from shows and films including Bridgerton, Insecure and Judas, and the Black Messiah that will air on Essence.com on April 23.
