Sia Describes Parenthood As ‘Painful and Rewarding’ After Adopting Two Sons
Sia opened up about her experience as a parent while chatting with the Australian television program The Project. The singer talked about being a new parent and the difficulties she has to face.
She claimed that the challenges that came her way were after she adopted her two teenage boys back in 2019. The singer shared that one is doing better than the other as she described it as hard. She added that it has been both painful and rewarding and that she has to keep reminding them she is there.
The Chandelier singer said, “It’s hard. It’s been both painful and rewarding and all I can say really is that I just have to just keep reminding them that I’ll be here, I’m never going anywhere, and I love them.”
She shared that it is scary to have someone say they will love you forever when you have been in 28 different homes. The singer had confirmed that she had welcomed two sons into her life. She did not reveal that up until 2020 as she shared that she adopted the teenage boys.
Sia shared that she adopted them when they were leaving foster care due to their age. The singer said, “I actually adopted two sons last year. They were both 18 — they’re both 19 years old now. They were aging out of the foster care system. Yeah, and I love them.”
The singer had later on opened up about the same in her interview with Vogue Australia. She shared more details about her decision as she explained the idea came to her after she watched a documentary. The musician said, “I am obsessed with reality television and documentaries, and I watched a documentary and saw my son”.
‘I’m going to find him and I’m going to be his mummy’
Sia explained how she felt the instant connection with the teenage boy after she realized he did not have his family. The Snowman singer shared her thoughts when she knew he had nobody. “I was like: ‘What? Like, he doesn’t have anybody. Oh my God. I’m going to find him and I’m going to be his mummy.’ And so that’s what I did,” she said.
After that, the singer traced the boy back to the actual location and adopted him and his friend. She had opened up about her journey to motherhood later that month in an interview. The musician explained that she had taken many years for herself after her divorce back in 2016.
However, she said everything changed when she watched the documentary. The singer explained that motherhood has not been easy. She said it has the challenges of the foster care system that both her sons grew up in. “The entire system is so underfunded and understaffed that there are not enough people to really monitor how the kids are being taken care of,” the singer said.
Sia further explained that her sons want to be a part of that change which is why she is trying to give them the resources to do that. “Most of their lives they’ve been conditioned to lie and manipulate, so the past year has been all about teaching them how to become rigorously honest and live in the moment without using any substances,” the mom of two explained.
The singer shared how there has been a lot of heartaches and that there has been a lot of trust that was lost. She added that there has also been a lot of regained trust as well. Sia shared, “But I do trust them both. And I’m proud because they’ve come a very long way.”
