Wonder Woman 1984: New Trailer Sees Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince Battle Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah

Debuting as part of the DC FanDome virtual convention this weekend, Warner Bros. revealed a brand new “Wonder Woman 1984” trailer earlier today. This is the first extended look at one of most highly anticipated movies of the year. Since the first trailer for “Wonder Woman 1984” was released in Dec. 2019.

Not a Traditional Sequel

With Patty Jenkins back in the director’s chair, the ’80s-set adventure finds star Gal Gadot reprising her role as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, an immortal Amazon princess warrior.

She is joined by co-stars from the first film, including Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, and Robin Wright. Plus a pair of fresh villains in the form of franchise newbies, Kristen Wiig as Cheetah and Pedro Pascal as Max Lord.

Jenkins co-wrote the screenplay with David Callaham and Geoff Johns. The makers have cautioned that it’s not a traditional sequel. During today’s panel, Jenkins reiterated that this next film is just another “chapter” in the ongoing story of Wonder Woman. Instead of picking up directly after the World War I events of the first film, the action here flashes forward to the year 1984.

“You’ve always had everything. Well, people like me have had nothing”

The new trailer included things we have seen in the first trailer, but the big reveal was seeing Wiig’s villainous Cheetah in action for the first time. It’s clear that Barbara Ann Minerva (Wiig) is an outsider who feels that she is being ignored by society. In one clip, she is seen telling Diana, “I don’t wanna be like anyone, I wanna be an apex predator. You’ve always had everything. Well, people like me have had nothing. Now it’s my turn. Get used to it.”

We see her go from homely to provocative as she dresses in cheetah print and go head-to-head with Wonder Woman. Towards the end of the trailer, we see Barbara in full Cheetah form with Diana saying, “Barbara, what did you do?”

“Only in Cinemas”

One thing that was clear from the trailer and the panel is that “Wonder Woman 1984” will most likely not debut on premium VOD. Despite early chatter the film might arrive debut on streaming service HBO Max, Warner Bros. have remained dedicated to giving the tent-pole a theatrical run.

“We all worked so hard to bring something that would be a big, visual spectacular. So we’re going to stick it out, we believe in putting it in the cinema,” Jenkins said in the panel, before pointedly avoiding mentioning a specific release date. “I can’t wait for the movie to come out soon!”

The trailer also does not list a release date, only noting the film is opening “only in cinemas.”

“I want it to feel like you’re seeing a movie in the ‘80s”

Jenkins has also previously revealed that her cinematic approach to Wonder Woman 1984 was to very much make an 80s blockbuster. For which a movie theater will be the ideal viewing.

“I want it to feel like you’re seeing a movie in the ‘80s. So, we did almost all of our stunts, our fights practically. We flew to locations all over the world. We have some of the most extensive, incredible wire work that nobody’s ever done before because no one has ever tried. What I loved was instead of shooting on a stage and doing this green screen thing, we literally flew all over the world and shot these incredible things which was a nightmare for [Gal].”

DC’s Inaugural FanDome Panel

DC’s inaugural “FanDome” is designed as a totally virtual event for DC fans in order to boast new looks at some of the most anticipated DCEU films. Including “The Batman,” “The Suicide Squad.” And the bound-for-HBO Max “Snyder Cut” of “Justice League.”

The first-ever FanDome panel included appearances from Jenkins, Pine, Wiig, Pascal, and of course Wonder Woman herself, star Gadot. Fans from around the world sent in their own questions, from costume choices to the cast’s on-set experience. The full FanDome event is only available online for 24 hours. But each panel will replay throughout today, including “Wonder Woman 1984.”

“It’ll tug at the heartstrings as well”

In 2019, “1984” producer Charles Roven teased the film would follow in the tradition of James Bond in being a sequel that feels like a standalone film. “It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana/Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years,” he said. “But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling. Even though it’ll have a lot of the same emotional things, a lot of humor, a lot of brave action. Tugs at the heartstrings as well.”

Originally slated to release last November, the movie has been delayed a few times. First moving to June 2020, before the pandemic shoved it into August and finally this autumn. As of now, “Wonder Woman 1984” is still set to hit theaters on October 2.
