Chennai Super Kings vs Gujarat Lions, 29th Match (N), Pune, April 17, 2022, Indian Premier League

Match Result: Pending

Match Report: Looking at the bowlers chart, Lockie Ferguson continued his poor figures like before against CSK. Last year, playing for KKR, Ferguson was smashed for over 55 runs by the same batsmen. Tonight was no different for the Kiwi pacer. Rashid Khan was economical but went wicketless. It would be interesting to see how Lions perform under Rashid Khan’s captaincy. They must also cope with the absence of their in-form captain Hardik Pandya.

Robin Uthappa lost his wicket in LBW to Shami. Shami continued his good form and that delivery which he bowled was simply unplayable. Moeen Ali followed Uthappa by losing his wicket to Alzarri Joseph. Joseph was debuting today for Gujarat Lions and he struck two wickets. But afterwards, we saw a big partnership between Ruturaj and Rayudu. Rayudu’s good touch continued as he scored 46 at a quick rate. During their partnership, it seemed like CSK might reach 180 comfortably. But the Lions allowed CSK to score just 45 runs in the last six overs. Incredible death overs bowling at display.

Ruturaj has arrived in style. He is back in form. Finally, after 5 matches of low scores, Ruturaj announced himself with a brilliant fifty, carrying his team to a competitive total. He was the highest scorer for CSK today, and the way he batted was just the way he did last year. Pure touch, elegance and timing. Credit must be given to the CSK camp for backing him again and again after repeated failures. He hit 5 fours and 5 sixes, especially in a time when CSK lost two wickets in the powerplay itself.

David Miller: It has been a good start for us. We won a couple of close games, could be critical towards the back end. The dice has rolled our side. We just tried to stick to our basics and strengths. When needed the guys have done the right thing, Seems so, so far (about his role being a finisher).

The batting order has changed in a couple of games. Gentle strokes in the beginning, release at the end. I’ve enjoyed my journey. Been playing around the world for some years now. Just want to give back to the younger players. As always you want to be performing and putting your hand up as a senior player. So enjoying that role and taking it on.

Rashid Khan: Bit of stiffness in the groin area for Hardik, so as a team we didn’t want to take a chance. He will rest and hopefully be back for the next game. Super excited, it’s kind of a dream. So I just want to learn as much as I can and give 100 percent. Matthew Wade is out and Saha is in. It’s just to balance it out as Hardik is absent.
