2020 Billboard Music Awards: Biggest Performances and Winners
The Billboard Music Awards 2020 aired on Wednesday after being delayed because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Many musicians and celebrities made an appearance and the wait seemed worth it.
With impressive performances and awards, the ceremony was full of good things that we all could use during this time. Kelly Clarkson played host once again and led the show with impressive performances. Not just the performances but even the acceptance speeches were truly what we needed.
Kelly hit it off by performing a cover of Whitney Houston’s Higher Love. Demi Lovato returned to stage with her debut TV performance of her political ballad which was released the very same day as the awards.
Some of the highlights from the Billboard Music Awards 2020 are:
The singer gave a heartfelt performance and set the tone for the night. She covered Whitney Houston’s song, Higher Love, and was accompanied by Pentatonix. The band is two-time BBMA nominees and along with them was renowned drummer, Sheila E. Combining all of them, the night started off in a beautiful rendition of Whitney’s song.
Sia came on to the stage to give a delightful performance of Courage to Change. She looked like a gift from heaven as she rocked a golden bow and donning her signature pink wig. The singer was wearing a fuchsia cloak gown which also incorporated the bow design.
Alicia Keys stepped up wearing a full glitter white ensemble. She looked a beautiful contrast to the red backdrop. The singer performed Love Looks Better and was also accompanied by a couple of background dancers as well as a band.
BBMAs Emotional Performances
At one point in her performance, she sat on a grand piano and played a set before continuing her powerful performance. The performance also marked Alicia’s first return to Billboard Music Awards stage since 2012. She performed with Stevie Wonder at that time.
John Legend came on stage weeks after he and Chrissy faced the tragic loss of their third child, Jack. He gave a powerful performance that was dedicated to none other than his wife itself. The singer gave a heartfelt performance of his superhit song, Never Break. John’s performance gained a lot of attention as fans were reaching for tissues and it was a timely performance considering what they went through.
Meanwhile, Brandy made her debut at the Billboard Music Awards 2020. Her performance marked as the first-ever performance as she gave fans a power-packed mix of her classic hits. The singer was donning an Xfinity stage wearing a white top with a long jacket and black pants. She braided her hair and had various top knots. Brandy started singing her medley along with her new song, Borderline. Ty Dolla $ign joined in with her for singing No Tomorrow.
The duo sand together maintaining social distance on the stage. Brandy ended her performance as a solo act.
Lizzo won the Top Song Sales Artist award at the BBMAs and she gave a powerful message. While accepting her award, she shared a message for the people whose voices are going unheard and their identities are suppressed. The singer said she has been thinking about suppression and the voices that refused to be suppressed.
Lizzo Shares Heartfelt Message
She added, I wonder, would I be standing here right now if it weren’t for the big Black women who refused to have their voices be suppressed. I just want to say right now, if you’re at home watching this and you are thinking about changing yourself to feel worthy, this is your sign to remain true to who you are.”
The artist thanked her fans and her team and added to the powerful message. She said when people try to suppress something, it is because that thing holds power. Lizzo said, “They’re afraid of your power there’s power in who you are there’s power in your voice. So whether it’s through music, protests, or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice, and refuse to be suppressed.”
Doja Cat also set the stage on fire in a shimmering, fringe-covered body-hugging ensemble. She gave serious Roxie Hart vibes with her performance of Juicy. The artist all the Chicago vibes into the stage and blended it with her own unique personality.
BTS blew up the stage as usual and performed their all English superhit, Dynamite. Just like their music videos, their performance was also the highlight of the night. Demi Lovato and many other stars also gave powerful performances.
Post Malone, however, had a big win of the night. He delivered a heartfelt speech and said it was a big surprise for him. Along with his award for Top Artist, the singer won a total of nine trophies. The host, Kelly wheeled out the numerous trophies in a cart. Malone looked extremely happy as he had a number of trophies and it was a sweet moment to help end the award show.
