Zack Synder Wants To Make Dark Knight Returns Movie With New Batman & Superman Actors

Zack Synder reveals his will to make a movie that is based on The Dark Knight Returns with new Batman and Superman actors. Many see Zack’s director’s cut of Justice League was the last leaf of his tenure with DC’s Extended Universe.

The filmmaker just proved he still has a lot of ideas in mind. Zack does not seem satisfied with Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice which was based on Frank Miller’s comic series. He revealed he wants to do a true adaptation.

The Dark Knight Returns was released in 1986 and is a four-issue comic book series by Frank Miller. It revolves around a 55-year old Bruce Wayne who is retired from the role of Batman and is dealing with the death of his protege, Jason Todd. Bruce then steps back into his role as the superhero to battle Superman. This leads to Bruce faking his own death and heading into the shadows yet again.

The venture also includes iconic villains in The Joker and Two-Face. Frank’s 1986 series has influenced Zack’s work in the DCEU as well as Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. However, the work has never had a true adaptation.

Now, Zack seems to be talking about making a Dark Knight Returns once again. But this time, he wants new Batman and Superman actors. He recently appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. The filmmaker got excited just at the mention of Frank’s comic book series. He said,  “That’s my white whale, Dark Knight Returns. That’s my Holy Grail. One day!”

But when he was asked if Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill will be in his dream version of the project, Zack denied it. He said, “No, I don’t think so. I think it would just be its own thing. Yeah, I think it would be its own thing. I would just do it one hundred per cent, Watchmen style, really frame-accurate. Really do it. I don’t think it would be that expensive, to be honest. I don’t think so. It’s pretty gritty.”

Zack has previously expressed an interest in a full-fledged adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns. He had said the same thing in the lead-up to the release of the Synder cut on HBO Max. After the positive response he received for his original vision of Justice League, he is looking forward to a Dark Knight Returns adaptation with renewed interest.
