Here’s everything we know about Strays, the upcoming spinoff of Kim’s Convenience on Canadian television. The original comedy series is set in Toronto and follows the adventures of the same store’s Korean Canadian family. Kim’s Convenience, which first aired on CBC Television, has developed a wider fanbase on Netflix since its release.
Kim’s Convenience has won multiple Canadian Screen Awards throughout the years. The programm celebrates Korean Canadian culture and contains breakout performances from a number of rising talents, including Liu, Bang, and Andrew Phung as Kimchee Han, a Handy Car Rental staffer. Unfortunately, due to the idea and narrative changes, one of the cast members of Kim’s Convenience has declined to participate in a spinoff.
Before cancelling Kim’s Convenience, CBC Television began developing Strays, and the concept irritated the aforementioned Simu Liu. He announced his absence from the spinoff in June 2021, saying, “I remain resentful of all of the circumstances that led to the one non-Asian character receiving her own programme.”
For Strays, CBC Television cast Frank Cox-O’Connell (Aaron Stone), Nikki Duval (Workin’ Moms), Tony Nappo (Jupiter’s Legacy), Paula Boudreau (The Handmaid’s Tale), Emily Piggford (The Girlfriend Experience), and David Webster (The Girlfriend Experience) (The Boys). Tina Jung will resume her role as Jeanie Park in Kim’s Convenience, with Kevin Vidal.
