WandaVision Will Explore Scarlet Witch’s BackStory & Eastern European Roots
Elizabeth Olsen has revealed that WandaVision will be exploring more of Scarlet Witch’s backstory. The character of Wanda Maximoff has been one of the supporting characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the end of Phase 2.
She has had multiple big moments on the big screen, however, she was not the only one in the spotlight. That is now changing with the expansion of Marvel Universe with Disney+ as the launch of WandaVision nears. It also features Paul Bettany as Vision and will be out early next year.
Marvel Studios, as usual, has kept a lot of details under wraps when it comes to the show’s story. The eye-catching factor of the show, so far, has been the different decades of sitcom TV shows. There is some possibility of altered reality and setup for Scarlet Witch to return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
However, fans are extremely intrigued and anxious as they wait to know what the show is about. The show will shed more light on Wanda’s past. Emmy magazine had published a feature on WandaVision which included new quotes from star Elizabeth Olsen and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
Elizabeth described the original meeting she had with Kevin about the idea to make WandaVision happen as a Disney+ show. According to the actress, the show will be exploring where Scarlet Witch originally came from. She said, “Kevin told me he wanted to merge two different comic series as inspiration. He explained the series would show how Wanda is originally from an Eastern European country and grew up on American black-market products like television.”
Is Wanda A Mutant Afterall?
Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced Wanda Maximoff in Avengers: Age of Ultron as a native of the fictional Eastern European country of Sokovia. And it is not clear if the actress was referring to the same country. However, there are several reasons as to why the actress might not have been referring to Sokovia. This opens up the possibility that WandaVision will show where she actually came from before.
Wanda is originally a native of Serbia and has had a convoluted history in Marvel’s comics. She and her brother Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver, both were kidnapped unknowingly as children. There is the possibility of a similar backstory for Wanda.
Even if WandaVision does not solve the mystery of where she was born, fans are hopeful that they will get her backstory in other ways. The character is thought to be a mutant for most of her comic history. Her character is also thought to be the daughter of Magneto, but when she debuted in Avengers: Age of Ultron, MCU could not use this backstory.
One of the most popular theories is that this part will be changing in Phase 4. The marketing of the show has dropped plenty of Easter eggs to a loose of House of M story. WandaVision could be the beginning to reveal that Scarlet Witch is actually a mutant in the MCU.
