Match Preview:
“Park it and move on.”
That was pretty much the core of Tim Southee’s press conference, coming less than two days after that major win by New Zealand over India. Southee was careful not to focus too much on the match gone by and instead chose to look at what’s in front: a busy schedule of three afternoon games inside five days. It will all start against Scotland in Dubai.
And so will New Zealand, in a way. They will be wearing a retro teal kit that features an unmistakable silver fern in front. The strip is a tribute to 2000 when New Zealand won the ICC Knockout Trophy in Nairobi. Keeping that in mind, the teal-coloured kit may not be the greatest choice to move on from a win over India but it’s a wardrobe refresh nonetheless. Sometimes that’s all you need. A little change.
Scotland captain doesn’t have an alternative kit to go to. But if the qualifying games are anything to go by, there’s surely some magic in the purples Scotland have donned so far in the tournament. They will hope it returns to them soon, for their two defeats so far in Super 12s have come against the less powerful teams in the group. It means that with nothing in the bank, they now face a diffcult task against New Zealand, India and Pakistan in a span of five days.
Can Scotland’s batting unit finally find some confidence in Dubai? It will be their first T20 World Cup game in the city and a new venue could just be the click the team needs. Especially when it comes to their struggling top-order, for whom the key will be rectifying the mistakes. And if they are ever in doubt of why that is, all they need to do is look at the other side. New Zealand will be all teal in there, hardly resembling the team that defeated India so emphatically the other night. And while Southee might prefer it that way, it might not be such a bad thing for Scotland.
Quotes:
“The emotions were all very high getting through to the Super 12s. It was something that we set as a target, and we believed that we could do, getting through to Super 12s. When you get through, then there’s even more eyes on you and the pressure sort of just — that bar raises just that little bit further”: Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer
It’s always exciting when you do get to play against a side that you haven’t played a lot against. Scotland are an improving side and a strong side, as you’ve seen throughout the early stages of this tournament. Playing them is something the guys are looking forward to: NZ Pacer Tim Southee
