UAE Requests Consular Access to Telegram Founder Pavel Durov Who is Detained in France
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has been arrested in France on suspicion of engaging in illegal activities on the popular messaging app. The arrest has sparked international attention and raised concerns about the future of the platform.
UAE Requests Consular Services
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), where Durov holds citizenship, has formally requested the French government to provide consular services to the detained CEO.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized its commitment to caring for its citizens and protecting their interests.
Serious Charges and French Legal Process
French prosecutors have leveled 12 charges against Durov, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and spreading child exploitation content. Durov’s detention can be extended for two days until August 28, when investigators will decide whether to formally charge or release him.
The arrest of Pavel Durov has garnered significant attention from various countries. Russia, where Durov is a prominent figure, has condemned the detention as politically motivated and a violation of freedom of speech.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov have both criticized the arrest, suggesting that the charges against Durov could be an attempt to intimidate the CEO of a major global company.
Meanwhile, TRON founder Justin Sun has proposed a “FreePavel DAO” to raise funds for Durov’s legal defense, pledging a $1 million donation. He has also called upon X CEO Elon Musk and social media commentator Nawfal to join the initiative.
The arrest of Telegram’s founder has had a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market, with Toncoin, a cryptocurrency tied to Telegram, experiencing a sharp decline in value.
The next 48 hours will be crucial as French authorities decide on the future of Pavel Durov. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for both Telegram and international diplomacy.
