The Weeknd will produce, co-write, and appear in The Idol, a forthcoming HBO pop singer cult drama series executive produced by Sam Levinson. Levinson is best known for directing HBO’s critically praised Euphoria, which starred Zendaya and earned her an Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series alongside a lot of other awards.
The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, has sold millions of albums worldwide thanks to singles like last year’s “Blinding Lights,” in addition to appearing at the Super Bowl halftime performance.
He’s also worked in television and movies before, creating and starring in an episode of American Dad! and co-starring with Adam Sandler in Robot Chicken and Uncut Gems.
The chart-topping performer will write and act in an HBO series named The Idol, according to Deadline. Levinson, Tesfaye, and Reza Fahim, The Weeknd’s creative director and a former nightlife entrepreneur, co-created the event. In addition to writing for the project, Joseph Epstein (Health and Wellness) will act as showrunner.
Ashley Levinson, Kevin Turen, Aaron L. Gilbert, and Mary Laws (Succession and Preacher), who will also write for the series, are among the other producers. The Idol depicts a female pop artist who has a romantic relationship with a mysterious L.A. club owner who is secretly the leader of a cult. It’s unclear who The Weeknd will play in the series, but he’ll almost certainly play a cult leader.
