The Last of Us 2 actor Laura Bailey shares horrifying death threats
The 39-year-old voice actress in the video game Last of Us Part II revealed that she is getting death threats because of her character’s role in the game.
Laura Bailey is well known for her incredible variety of roles across multiple franchises. Which includes, Uncharted, Gears of War, Street Fighter, Saints Row, Metal Gear Solid and Halo to name just a few. Bailey was picked up for the role of Abby in The Last of Us Part II, delivering one of her most incredible performances yet.
However, fans were insanely upset over the game and found Bailey as a target to unload their frustration. The online abuse she has received revolves around her fictional character, Abby, being responsible for the death of a “beloved character” in the video game. The actress took to social media, on Friday, July 3, 2020, to share the hatred she had been receiving.
Addressing the hate
“Man. I try to only post positive stuff on here. But sometimes this just gets a little overwhelming,” she begins. The actress had blacked out some parts of the messages in order to avoid spoilers for fans. “I blacked out some of the words cuz, ya know, spoilers. Side note. Thank you to all the people sending me positive messages to balance it out. It means more than I can say.”
What follows is a series of disgusting messages from people who simply can’t process the concept of Bailey being an actor hired to portray a fictional character. The messages were extremely hateful and not only threatened Bailey but her family as well. Some stated that they wished her parents were killed by cancer and others threatened to attack her child.
“I’m going to find where you live and slaughter you for what you did to [redacted],” says one. “Mark my [expletive] words.”
“I hope your parents die of hard cancer for killing my [redacted],” says another. “I will find you and I will kill your kid for that, just wait for that.” One simply states: “I will stab you.”
“You deserve so much better!”
Thankfully, countless fans and industry names came out in support of Bailey. Friends and fans of the voice actress have been quick to send her support. YouTuber JackSepticEye wrote,: ‘I’m so sorry you have to deal with this!’ Actress and cosplayer Mica Burton had a sweet message for the voice actress. ‘Laura you are such a damn light in this world. ANYONE who stoops this low doesn’t deserve to consume anything your talent has touched. ‘I am so sorry there are such hateful pathetic humans in this world, you deserve so much better. You deserve the world <3 love you.’
Bailey’s fans are trying their best to knock some sense into the users. Pointing it out that the actress is separate from her character. One fan wrote. “Laura Bailey literally plays some of the best video game characters and all these angry nerds are sending her death threats because of Abby. Shut up and realize a job is a job.” Another user said, “Laura Bailey is an actress. Based on your opinions of the character, a damn good one. But first and foremost, she is a person. A person with real feelings. She does not deserve your abuse for doing her job. You are not entitled to abuse her because you have access to her.”
Bailey is definitely appreciative of the love, as the voice actress tweeted, “Damn. The amount of encouraging responses to this. I’ve always believed that good people far outweigh the bad. Thanks for reminding me of that today.”
