The Director of The Crow is Working on a Dark City TV Show

Alex Proyas, the cult masterpiece The Crow filmmaker, is currently working on a television series adaptation of his 1998 film Dark City. The neo-noir sci-fi picture follows actor Rufus Sewell, who wakes up with no memories and is accused of murder in a city where the sun never rises.

In the process of figuring out the truth, he uncovers a larger mystery involving a sinister society known only as the “Strangers.” The film, which starred Kiefer Sutherland and Jennifer Connelly, was critically acclaimed and is widely regarded as a key influence on The Matrix series, which debuted one year later.

Dark City Universe

Last year, Proyas returned to the Dark City universe with a new short film, Mask of the Evil Apparition, which is currently being screened as part of the Popcorn Frights Film Festival’s virtual presentation.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the event will include a virtual Q&A with Proyas in addition to his short film. Proyas said during the Q&A session that a Dark City TV series is in the works and is currently in the “very early phases” of development.

While Dark City’s first box office performance was overshadowed by James Cameron’s Titanic, the film’s novel premise and spectacular graphics won it critical acclaim, with Roger Ebert even calling it the finest picture of 1998. Fans of Proyas’ distinct design will no doubt be pleased to learn about this latest revelation, which is dark, scary, and incredibly interesting.
