‘The Crown’ Will Get a Sixth Season After All

In a surprise royal twist, Netflix is opening back up its palace doors for season 6 of The Crown. Six months after The Crown creator and show runner Peter Morgan announced that the series would end with its fifth season, he has changed his mind.

Netflix announced the change of plans on Twitter on Thursday, highlighting that the creator wants to do justice to the “richness and complexity” of the story. This time however, it has been made very clear that season 6 will in fact be the last season in the show.

Peter Morgan’s statement

“As we started to discuss the story lines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.” Morgan said in a statement. “To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day. It will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

The change of heart comes just six months after Netflix announced that Season 5 will be the last. It means that the new Queen Elizabeth II, Imelda Staunton, will follow her predecessors in filming two series.

As will Lesley Manville, who was recently confirmed to play Princess Margaret.

The actors will take over from Olivia Colman as Elizabeth and Helena Bonham Carter as Margaret, who will finish their royal reigns with the upcoming fourth season.

What fans can expect from season 6

Reports have revealed that season 6 will likely take place in the “early 2000s.” Which means there won’t be any episodes that address Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to step back from royal duties. Season 6 is also unlikely to cover Prince Andrew’s ouster after his perceived relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Cindy Holland, Netflix vice president, voiced her thoughts on the new change of plans. “The Crown keeps raising the bar with each new season. We can’t wait for audiences to see the upcoming fourth season, and we’re proud to support Peter’s vision and the phenomenal cast and crew for a sixth and final season.”

Season 5 updates

It goes without saying, but the additional season reveal has made a lot of fans very happy. They can’t wait for season 4 to be out, and are already excited for what’s in store in season 5 and 6. Season four of the series is slated to premiere later this year, welcoming Gillian Anderson as UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Newcomer Emma Corrin will be portraying the young Diana Spencer.

Season 5 will most likely be arriving in late 2021, once production can begin after the COVID-19 pandemic.
