‘The Crown’ Casts Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip for Seasons 5 and 6
The Netflix series has cast Jonathan Pryce as the next Prince Philip. He will be playing the part for seasons 5 and 6.
The actor will star opposite Imelda Staunton, who is revealed to be playing Queen Elizabeth II. Meanwhile, Lesley Manville has been cast as Princess Margaret for seasons 5 and 6.
Following actors Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies, Jonathan will be the third actor to play the role of the Prince. Queen Elizabeth has been played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman. And Princess Margaret has been played by Vanessa Kirby and Helena Bonham Carter.
The premiere of The Crown Season 4 is set to premiere later this year. Creator Peter Morgan was previously decided to end the series with season 5 but he changed his mind. It was announced last month that the series will be getting another season.
Peter said in a statement that as his team started discussing the storylines for season 5, they realized something. It became clear to them that to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, they would stick to their original plan. Which was of having six seasons of the series. The creator further added, “To be clear, series six will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”
Imelda had previously said she is thrilled to be a part of the Netflix series. She said she wants to capture the character and not let it go. The actress said, “I would love to do that for all the people who have gone before me.”
The following season will be the last time we see Olivia Colman as Elizabeth, Menzies as Philip, and Helena Bonham Carter as Margaret. Gillian Anderson also stars as Margaret Thatcher, while Emma Corin makes her debut as Princess Diana.
The fourth installment of the series will capture the royal family in the 20th century. However, Morgan confirms that season five will be heading to the 21st century. It is revealed by the creator that it would not be any close to the royal family at the present.
Jonathan might be best known as the High Sparrow in seasons five and six of Game of Thrones, but he also just received an Oscar nomination this year for his work in The Two Popes.
