Simu Liu-A Misogynist? Old Reddit Posts Resurface Debunked

Disney stars have been under fire for quite some time. The storms that passed by Gina Carano, Brie Larson and James Gunn have now come to the doors of Simu Liu. They are now facing a mounting PR crisis over the latest superhero Shang-Chi.

In mid-September, posts about Simu began circulating from a now-deleted Reddit account. It made racist and misogynist comments and many believe it belonged to the actor. This led to the actor issuing a brutal attack in response. Various actors have come under fire for their old posts on social media.

Back in 2020, Hartley Sawyer was booted from The Flash after the re-emergence of his old racist and misogynist tweets. Earlier this year even Chris Pratt faced such pressure after his old homophobic tweets resurfaced. However, it was later debunked as photoshopped. And even singer Billie Eilish became the target after a TikTok video showed her mocking Asian languages.

Chris seemed to have escaped but Billie is still under fire. But for Simu, it seems like he might not be lucky to escape this. Both Marvel and Disney have not responded to the allegations which only makes our heads turn to the actor himself. The controversy began after Slate published a story about Men’s Rights Asians subreddit. Many Twitter users identified Simu before it blew up as the old Reddit posts were being shared.

Slate published the article and the story revolved around the MRAsian subculture where people harass and threaten Asian men. The story made its way to social media with people debating who the people were. Actor Edward Hong tweeted, “f–k it. The person in question is Simu Liu”. He then followed it up with a series of tweets identifying the actor.

Edward Hong Accuses Simu Liu

The actor shared that his intent is not to cancel the actor as he admitted to once being an MRA himself. He added that it is possible he still has traves of it and he needs to eliminate that. Edward said, “Many of my Asian male peers are MRA, whether they admit it or not. Maybe Simu can change. But change is only possible when one can own up to it.”

Another user said that Simu was a part of an anti-Black subreddit that called Asian women traitors. Many people have come ahead with proof that Simu was part of MRA. The screenshots of old posts the account made have been circled back to the actor.

For one, the account says “I am a Canadian actor,” in one post. In 2017, the account was also posted on r/KimsConvenience, the Canadian sitcom Liu was part of before he became Shang-Chi. He had allegedly thanked his fans for tuning in and for being a part of the show. After that, there have been various posts on Reddit. This can be a clear reference to Simu and it did not take long for users to blame him.

Some of his posts have been unsavoury and he says it’s depending on where one lives in the world. He added, “I am all about the gender equality however girls are just not as good as boys at sports.” In another one of these posts, he wrote, “Think that women shouldn’t be allowed to show their faces in public”.

Fan Debunks Viral Reddit Posts

The account has been deleted but the posts have resurfaced. The actor has not directly addressed the issue. However, Simu has thanked a fan for their help as Katie Bee took it upon herself. The user clarifies, “The screenshots are the ONLY remotely problematic moments on the entire account, and some of them are taken out of context”.

The comment about women’s faces was made to a question, “What is something people do that makes you instantly despise them?” The other one about girls and sports was posted on a thread which questioned, “what are some “a—–e” things that you say or do on a regular basis?”

Simu liked many of those tweets and made a brief comment himself without directly addressing anything. He wrote, “Twitter is a slanderous place sometimes, and it feels good to shut down trolls and bad faith actors who want to drag your name through the mud”. It is clear that the actor’s Reddit posts have been taken out of context as many accusing him have not screenshotted the original post or context.
