Shang-Chi’s New ‘Need’ Trailer Teases New Theory

Fans have been waiting for the upcoming Marvel venture, Spider-Man: No Way Home’s trailer. However, before that, we have another release coming up, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Marvel recently released another trailer for the venture titled, Need.

This could be a reference to Shang-Chi’s father, Mandarin/ Wen-Wu’s need for his offspring to take over the mantle. The description of the promo included Wen-Wu’s speech to Shang-Chi, where he is heard saying, “You can’t outrun your destiny.”

This can also be a reference to Shang-Chi’s need to not follow his father. The new trailer does not give away a lot but surely foes spawn a few theories. As per these theories, Shang-Chi acquires some of the rings to fight against his father and also the role of Michelle Yeoh’s character, Jiang Nan.

One of the few things that were evident was Abomination’s new look. The teaser gave us a better look at the character from his fight with Wong in the tournament. This character seemed to have fin-like ears, which can be a reference to the character’s look in the comics. However, this is different from what fans saw in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.

As for why Wong was fighting in the tournament, he himself had previously talked about his return. In an interview with SYFY Wire, Benedict Wong shared that he was pleased when Shang-Chi was happening. However, he added that he was a little “crestfallen” that he wasn’t a part of it. But then he got a call from Marvel Studios and he was extremely ecstatic.

Shang-Chi’s Trailer Sees Connection to Another Venture

The last time his character appeared on a Marvel project, Avengers: Infinity War, he was seemingly broke. Wong did not have such opportunities to amass wealth as Doctor Strange did. This is one possible explanation for why Wong needs to fight in the “Mortal Kombat” style tournament to gain a sum of money.

The trailer also gave us a glimpse at Shang-Chi’s use of the ten rings. It showcased Shang-Chi and Mandarin using five rings each. This might be a scene in between when Shang-Chi and his father were training. But later on in the trailer, Shang-Chi was seen trying to snatch away all of the rings from his father.

We are aware that Marvel loves combining two characters from the comics to build a new role. One such example is Sylvie from the Loki series, who was created by combining Lady Loki, Sylvie Hushton and Ikol Loki. There is also a theory that Marvel might be adapting the same thing for the ancient island shown in Shang-Chi trailers.

In an interview earlier, Michelle had talked about her character guarding an ancient city. She could have been talking about K’un-Lun. In Marvel comics, Valley of the Sleeping Dragon exists as a location in the normal plane. But K’un-Lun is a mystical city that exists in another dimension. If true, this could also hint at a potential association between MCU’s Iron Fist and Shang-Chi.
