Scream’s Jamie Kennedy Believes Randy Is “Deader Than Dead”

Jamie Kennedy, who played horror movie fan Randy Meeks in Scream, believes his character is “deader than dead.” Wes Craven, the horror maestro who made a name for himself with A Nightmare on Elm Street, helmed the first Scream film.

Scream was innovative when it was released in 1996 because of the way it ridiculed genre cliches through a creative and frequently humorous script by Kevin Williamson. The film follows Sidney, played by Neve Campbell, and her pals as a masked killer known as Ghostface uses horror movies as part of a deadly game that begins to rack up a corpse count.

Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard, and Kennedy were among the young actors in the cast. Randy, played by Kennedy, was an important character in the first film because he was a local video store clerk who was familiar with the horror movie cliches that the killer was employing.

Randy’s knowledge of the genre allows him to put forth the rules that the characters must follow in order to survive. Randy was fortunate enough to make it to Scream 2, the sequel. Randy, on the other hand; was killed by Ghostface inside a van, out of view of the audience, in the sequel.

Kennedy reappeared in Scream 3 via a videotape recorded by Randy before his death; which was his final appearance in the franchise. With Scream 5, simply titled Scream, slated to hit theatres early next year; rumours abound that Randy will make a comeback.

“Sometimes things happen, you can’t explain”

Kennedy was asked about Randy’s place in the universe of Scream while chatting with Comicbook. Kennedy initially expressed interest in returning to the role “if there was a plausible way.” However, the actor soon followed up by saying, “I believe I’m deader than dead,” before speculating on why Randy’s death may still be felt by viewers. Take a look at what Kennedy has to say in the video below:

“If I was in the mythology, I think my mythology is strong because I’m not in it; you know what I mean? So if I came back, it could bastardize it. But if there was a plausible way that wouldn’t piss off the audience; it might be interesting to entertain, but, as of right now; I believe I’m deader than dead; and I think that’s what makes it good is the fact that you are dead and that’s why it’s strong because you died. You were one of the good ones and maybe you shouldn’t have went, but that’s what life is. It’s pain. Sometimes things happen, you can’t explain. And that’s why it resonates so much with people because of that.”

Kennedy then went on to discuss Randy fan theories he’d heard throughout the years. Randy being the mastermind behind it all, a twin sibling no one knew about; and even an alternate world are among the hypotheses. Randy’s possible return originates from his off-screen death in Scream 2.

While devoted fans often speculate on beloved characters, Randy’s possible return stems from his off-screen death in Scream 2. The characters observed the aftermath of his death, but not the death itself; fuelling speculation that Randy is still alive and ready to return to the franchise.

While Kennedy appears to be certain that Randy is no longer alive; other fans are hoping that he will resurface in Scream 5, which will include the return of franchise veterans Campbell, Cox, and Arquette. Scream 5 just released a trailer that gave fans their first look at the impending sequel, as well as some new young stars Jenna Ortega and Jack Quaid.

The objectives of the new killer, or killers, are unknown, although the film appears to be attempting, like Scream 4; to bring the franchise into the present era. If you want to see if Randy makes an appearance in the new Scream, it will be released on January 14, 2022.
