In the middle of Scarlett Johansson’s continuing Black Widow case against Disney, Elizabeth Olsen of Wandavision has spoken out in support of her Avengers co-star. After Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista, Olsen has become the latest celebrity to come out in support of Johansson.
During a Vanity Fair interview with actor-comedian Jason Sudeikis last week, Olsen praised Johansson in response to a question about whether performers were worried about movies having a difficult time accessing theatres post-pandemic.
“I believe she’s tough, and when I read it, I thought to myself, ‘Good for you, Scarlett.’ I’m concerned about a number of issues. Scarlett has nothing to be concerned about. However, I am concerned about small movies being able to be shown in theatres. “That was a thing before COVID,” Olsen explained. She went on to say that it’s all about the contracts when it comes to performers and their pay.
According to Variety, the discussion touched on and emphasised issues surrounding theatrical releases, which are still recovering from the continuing pandemic in theatres.
Meanwhile, Olsen’s remark comes after Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney last month. She claimed the media broke her contract by simultaneously releasing her first solo Marvel movie, Black Widow, in theatres and on Disney+’s streaming site. The lawsuit claims, however, that the movie’s debut on the streaming platform cost her possible remuneration tied to the film’s theatre income.
The Walt Disney Company also issued a comment about the matter, claiming that Johansson’s claim is without merit. According to Deadline, a Disney official also stated that the studio has honoured Johansson’s contract, and that the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has improved her income ability.
In addition, Johansson’s agent, CAA co-chairman Bryan Lord, reacted to Disney’s remark, calling it a clear attack on his client’s character.
