Scarlett Johansson has criticized the” hypersexualization of the Black Widow character in the Marvel’s Iron Man 2 film.
The black Widow was Natasha Romanff appeared for the first time in the 2010 film.
“You look back at Iron Man 2 and while it was really fun and had a lot of great moments in it, the character is so sexualised, you know?” the actress told Collider.
“In fact, they talk about it as if it were a part of something, as like a property, or a thing, nor a possession”
Since then, the Black Widow character has become a prominent figure in the Marvel cinematic universe and has been seen in a total of seven films. It will be seen in its own stand alone film in the coming months.
Talking about the evolution of her character, the actress has revealed that at first, she was treated like a “piece of ass”.
“Tony [Stark played by Robert Downey Jr.] at one point said “I want some.”
“Yes, yes, and at one point called the character a piece of meat, and perhaps it was really a compliment at the time. Do you understand what I’m saying?”
She added that at the time her self-esteem was “likely to be measured by such comments about her appearance, but ever since she had become a mother, she has become more aware of her own sense of self-worth.
The 36-year-old actress also noted how the things are different now for upcoming young feminine actors due to the #MeToo movement.
“Now people, young girls, are getting a much more positive message, but it’s been incredible to be a part of that shift and be able to come out the other side and be a part of that old story, but also progress,” she added.
“Evolve. I think it’s pretty cool.”
