Scarlett Johansson Blacklisted By Marvel? Joe Russo Hints Tension Post Lawsuit

Disney’s goliath corporation continues to profit handsomely from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. MCU films such as the ‘Avengers’ series and ‘Spiderman,’ as well as Disney+ originals such as ‘Loki,’ ‘Wanda-Vision,’ ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ and others, have greatly increased Disney’s value.

However, the entertainment company has recently come under fire for their treatment of their actors. Disney has been accused of exploiting its performers and the company was recently involved in a legal dispute with Scarlett Johansson, who plays Black Widow, a key member of the superhero team ‘The Avengers.’

Scarlett Johansson filed a complaint against Disney earlier this year, alleging that the simultaneous release of her film “Black Widow” in theatres and Disney+ had a negative impact on the box office. Scarlett’s income was impacted as a result of this.

The streaming giant appears to have broken the deal by releasing the film on two platforms, as Johansson claimed she had contracted for an exclusive theatrical release alone. She claimed the stunt was staged to promote Disney’s streaming service.

In response to the complaint, Disney claimed that Johansson was being insensitive to the pandemic; which they said justified their decision to release the film on Disney+. The litigation was recently settled, with both sides claiming to have reconciled their disagreements. Both Disney Studios Chairman Alan Bergman and Johansson issued remarks expressing their gratitude for the resolution; and looking forward to future collaboration.

Regarding the now-resolved litigation, filmmaker Joe Russo recently stated that there was a lot of friction in the film industry. “There’s a lot of tension,” Russo told Variety; “just like there is in a lot of industries because there’s a lot of disruption. People’s nerves are fraying, and it’s hard to predict what’s going to happen or where anything is going.”

He continued, “I’m glad that the lawsuit’s resolved. I do think it was indicative of significant change that’s been happening. The resolution speaks volumes about the respect for artists moving forward in this changing landscape.”

He also stated that major businesses are currently concerned over the shift in artists’ attitudes toward their rights. According to the Wall Street Journal, Joe and his brother Anthony were at odds during talks for their future Marvel feature; and declined to comment further because they were in the middle of a contract.
