Rihanna Reveals She Felt Like A “Clown” At The 2015 Met Gala

Rihanna is undoubtedly the queen of fashion looks and so it goes without saying that she would bring her A-game to the most prestigious fashion event of the year, The Met Gala.

Very few Met Gala looks are as iconic as her 2015’s China: Through the Looking Glass outfit. That custom Guo Pei gown with its gorgeous yellow coat cascading down the steps of the Met, was arguably one of her best looks. The exemplary gown took over 6,000 hours to make, and weighed around 25 kilograms.

After all these years, Ri has now opened up about what it was like to wear the dress, which hard to imagine, made her feel anything other than the goddess she is.

“Oh my god, I’m a clown, people are gonna laugh at me”

Although Riri was called “best dressed” by numerous outlets for the show stopping look, it turns out the moment itself was quite nerve-wracking for her she. The singer even thought she looked “like a clown” compared to how everyone else was dressed on the red carpet.

“I remember being so scared to get out of that car because I felt like, ‘I’m doing too much,'” Rihanna said in an interview with Access on Wednesday. “I was driving past the red carpet and I was just seeing gowns. I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m a clown, people are gonna laugh at me. This is too much.”

Riri drove past the Red Carpet 3 times before finally stepping out

It seems that part of the reason Rihanna was so nervous about this particular red carpet, was to do with the coat itself and how big it was. “The choreography of getting in the car and getting out. We had to choreograph it,” she revealed. “Who sits at the doors? Where does the coat go? Where do I sit?”

The “Needed Me” singer went on to reveal that she was so scared to step on the red carpet that she drove past it three times before eventually plucking up the courage to get out.

When asked about her opinion on the deluge of omelette memes that landed on social media post-gala, she laughed. “Oh the frying pan with the egg? Legendary. I don’t regret it!”

“Nothing makes me feel better than being invisible

This isn’t the first time that Rihanna has opened up about feeling nervous or anxious before a big public event. In an Interview with British Vogue earlier this year, she explained that the nerves can be “devastating” in the moments before she arrives.

Rihanna revealed in the same interview that her anxiety once got so bad that she pulled out of the 2016 Grammys at the last minute while getting ready for the event. RiRi had been scheduled to perform Kiss It Better but just a few hours before the show started, she pulled out. Representatives for the singer cited illness and the need for vocal rest at the time.

“I left the Grammys one time. Left! In the middle of my hair and makeup,” Rihanna told British Vogue. “My hair half up, half of my lash on. Being on camera, being in a room full of celebrities is still not normal for me, by the way,” she went on. “Nothing makes me feel better than being invisible.”
