Reese Witherspoon admits to not knowing about homosexuality. She wasn’t taught anything about it while she was growing up.

But she understood things, when she moved to Los Angeles. In an interview wih Regina King, as a part of Variety’s Actors in actors issue, she made the revelation. Regina King and Reese worked together for Legally Blonde 2.

Reese was born in 1976 in Lousiana. The mother of three was however raised in Nashville. She moved to LA during the initial stages of her career.

When they were discussing about Reese’s new show ‘Little Fires Everywhere’, she revealed that she did not understand what homosexuality was. Reese was giving the interview from her home in California.

‘No one spoke to me about sexuality when I was a teenager,’ she said. Further revealing Reese said that her grandparents or parents never explained it to her. She continued saying she learnt it from someone she was auditioning with.

Reese discusses her character, Elena, who talks about homosexuality in the show. She said that she took snippets of the conversation she once had about the topic into the scene.

Elena, is a character who is a matriach of the perfect Richardson family.

Reese recalled one of her conversations with her grandmother, where she described it as ‘very rare’. Her grandmother also described it as not something that would happen very often in the nineties.

Reese further reveals that the conversations she had with her grandmother was added into the show.

‘She said, “Homosexuality is very rare, Reese. That’s not a thing that happens very often.” And we put it in the script.’

Regina points out that her character Elena says this on the show. Reese replies saying it is because she was told the same thing once upon a time.

Reese describes Little Fires Everywhere as a ‘great experience’. She further states to be able to look back in time and think that she herself was a teenager. The show helps Reese understand what her mom said about sexuality, race, and class. It also helps her to reflect on what was told to her that was true or false. Reese adds that it helped her think about how insensitive she was back at the time.
