After a two-day break, production on House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel series, has resumed. Filming on the series, which is mostly set in the United Kingdom, began in April and is likely to continue in Spain and California.
The show is being produced by Ryan J. Condal of Rampage and George R. R. Martin, the author of the Song of Ice and Fire series, on which both shows are based. House of the Dragon was the latest in a long line of shows to be cancelled, including Bridgerton and American Horror Story.
The spinoff is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Blood novel, which followed House Targaryen from their conquest of Westeros to their eventual downfall. House of the Dragon takes place 300 years before the events of HBO’s acclaimed fantasy series, when the Targaryens still dominated Westeros. It will star Paddy Considine as King Viserys, Emma D’Arcy as his daughter and heir-apparent Princess Rhaenyra, and Olivia Cooke as Viserys’ second wife Queen Alicent Hightower, who seeks the kingdom for her sons.
After a member of the production team tested positive for COVID-19, production on the House of the Dragon was halted. The crew member was told to isolate, and close contacts were told to do the same, in accordance with the show’s strict testing procedure and industry rules, effectively shutting down production on the series. After a two-day pause, Entertainment Weekly reports that filming on the series has resumed.
Despite the disappointing Game of Thrones finale in 2019, fans have been eagerly anticipating a return to Westeros and a deeper understanding of the realm. Following the spectacular success of the first season, HBO has logically sought to produce a number of spinoffs and prequels, including an adaptation of the Dunk and Egg stories, 10,000 Ships, which will follow the warrior Nymeria as she seeks to find both Dorne and House Martell, and 9 Voyages, which will follow Steve Toussaint’s character Corlys Velaryon/the Sea Snake on his many famous voyages.
However, it may be advisable for fans to keep their excitement in check. Another spinoff series based in King’s Landing’s Flea Bottom was announced, however it was later cancelled.
HBO is most likely waiting to see how successful House of the Dragon is before committing fully to any of the other shows. Thankfully, now that production is back on track, fans of House of the Dragon will hopefully not have to wait long for any fresh information before the film’s premiere next year.
