Netflix Will Host Its Own Virtual Fan Event, Geeked Week

Netflix has announced its own virtual “Geeked Week” Event. The service originally started as a DVD-rental service back in 1997 and now Netflix has expanded into a vast streaming platform. The online streaming service includes an extensive catalogue of content that features hundreds of Netflix original titles.

Netflix has over 207 million paid subscribers across 190 countries as of 2021. The platform holds partnerships with massive media conglomerates like NBCUniversal, WarnerMedia, and Sony Pictures to name a few. Last year, Netflix’s top three most-watched series were Lucifer, Emily in Paris and their hit, The Queen’s Gambit. These three shows are original Netflix titles.

However, this summer, Netflix is set to launch its first virtual and free event. It is titled, Geeked Week which will commence in the span of five days. Geeked Week will include exclusive content like a new trailer, art and news coverage. It will also include appearances from Netflix’s fan-favourite original series. The event might be similar to Comic-Con in terms of its theme. It will be modelling Disney’s D-23 expo in the way it provides attendees with updates and exclusive screenings of the content.

Netflix said in a statement that over the years it has been lucky enough to inspire loyal followings for series and films like Stranger Things, Castlevania, The Old Guard and many more. The streaming platform further added that these fandoms are not just about making GIFs, buying merch, but they are about sharing excitement and connecting.

“They’re about sharing excitement and connecting with people from all over the world…”

Netflix said, “Over the years, Netflix has been lucky enough to inspire loyal followings for series and films like Stranger Things, Castlevania, The Old Guard and many more. But these fandoms aren’t just about making GIFs, buying merch or theorizing about the next big twist(s). They’re about sharing excitement and connecting with people from all over the world who hold the same passion for those characters and stories. Netflix Geeked, Netflix’s home for all things genre entertainment, wants to celebrate these communities and bring them together. That’s why we’re launching Geeked Week.”

Geeked Week will run from June 7- 11 and will be featuring headlining shows like Lucifer, The Witcher, and the highly-anticipated Cowboy Bebop. Netflix’s catalogue of original programming has grown over the past few years. It has also achieved accolades like Academy Awards and Emmys. The fan bases for these shows have also increased especially that of Lucifer.

Netflix has successfully monopolized its sci-fi and fantasy audiences by creating the Geeked Week event. It has also assured that the virtual event will be well-attended this summer and will continue for years to come.
