Netflix Planning Korean Adaptation Of Spanish Hit, ‘Money Heist’

Netflix announced that it is working on a Korean adaptation of one of the most successful shows on the platform. The superhit international series, Money Heist will receive a Korean version.

The original series was in Spanish and was called La Casa De Papel. The hit series is in production for its fifth and final season. The highly-anticipated series attracted more than 65 million viewers in the first few weeks. Money Heist is created by Alex Pina and is a crime drama series.

The storyline follows a group of robbers who plan a series of heists along with their leader who they call Professor. The creator will also be an executive producer of the Korean adaptation. It will be directed by Kim Hong-Sun, who is known for his work in the fantasy crime genre; and TV dramas like The Guest, Voice, and Black.

The show will be written by Ryu Yong-Jae and his team, who have been a part of Netflix’s original series My Holo Love and tvN series, Psychopath Diary. The producers of the show are BH Entertainment and Contents Zium.

According to Alex, the Korean creators have been developing their own language and audiovisual culture for years. He shared that they have managed to go beyond cultural borders. The creator further added how he finds it fascinating that the world of La Casa Da Papel is attractive to Korean creators.

“‘La Casa de Papel’ is proof that significant works based in different cultures can be widely distributed”

“Korean creators have been developing their own language and audiovisual culture for years,” said Pina. “They have managed, like our series, to go beyond cultural borders; and become a point of reference for thousands of viewers around the world, especially among young people. That is why I find it fascinating that the world of La Casa De Papel is so attractive to Korean creators as to do an adaptation. The fact that the action is set on the Korean Peninsula also seems to me to be a milestone; which I am really delighted about.”

The Spanish show premiered back in 2017 and has been widely popular ever since. Netflix shared in a statement, how the international popularity of the Spanish series is proof that significant works based in different cultures can be widely distributed.

“The international popularity of the Spanish series ‘La Casa de Papel’ is proof that significant works based in different cultures and languages can be widely distributed by Netflix; and loved by audiences worldwide,” the company said in a statement.
