NBC Cable Network Boycotts And Refuses To Air Golden Globe Awards 2022 Due To Lack Of Diversity

US network NBC is the latest news and broadcasting cable outlet to boycott the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) due to a lack of diversity.

NBC, which has been broadcasting the Golden Globes awards ceremony since 1996, has said it will not broadcast the show in 2022 and wants to see a “significant change”.

The Background

WarnerMedia, Netflix and Amazon Studios have already refused to participate in HFPA-related events.

Golden Globes is second only to Oscars in terms of profile.

The HFPA, whose members voted for the prizes given to the Golden Globes winners, has faced months of criticism from a February Los Angeles Times report stating that it had not had a single black member for 20 years.

‘Window Dressing Platitude’

The non-profit last week put forward a plan for inclusion and reform. Time’s Up, a leading advocate for industry reform, slammed the proposal as “window-dressing platitudes”.

“Any organization or sponsors that set themselves up to pass judgment on our vibrant community of creators and talent must do better,” said Time’s Up president Tina Tchen.

Joining the angry chorus on Monday is actor Tom Cruise, who returned to the HFPA for the three Golden Globes he won years ago, including two statuettes of Jerry Maguire’s Best Actor and Born on The 4th of July.

Hollywood has faced repeated criticism for its lack of inclusion.
