The mother of a girl who was killed for dressing up as a goth said it meant “big amount” to work with Coronation Street on the issue of hate crime.
Sophie Lancaster, 20, died at the hospital 13 days after being attacked in a park in Bacup, Lancashire, in 2007.
ITV soap operas will address the issue when characters Nina Lucas and Seb Franklin are violently attacked for no apparent reason.
The “hard hitting story line” issue will be heard next month on the Drama.
Ms. Lancaster’s mother Sylvia founded the Sophie Lancaster Foundation in her daughter’s memory to focus on building respect, as well as an understanding of culture among the masses.
She said: “I am personally aware of the abuse, harassment and violence people are experiencing.
“Hate crimes are often targeted at stigmatised and minority groups and Sophie was attacked three times before the last attack that killed her – but she did not report any previous attacks.
“Coronation Street covering this issue means such a huge amount to me.
“We want people from other countries to know that they must not tolerate this form of discrimination and intolerance, and they must report it.”
Producer Iain MacLeod said: “This incredibly complex and hard-hitting storyline type of story, centered on an absurd act of violence, will draw in characters from all corners of our narrative universe and will, we hope, leave the audience with a clear message.
“Everyone, no matter what they look like, how they dress or what their lifestyle is all about, should be treated with patience and respect.”
