Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford said he had received “at least 70 racial insults” on social media following Villarreal’s defeat in the Europa League on Wednesday.
United later wrote on Twitter that their players had been subjected to racially motivated harassment.
United were beaten 11-10 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Gdansk, Poland.
“So far it has counted at least 70 racial slurs in my public accounts,” Rashford wrote on Twitter.
“For those who work to make me feel worse than I already do, I wish you the best of luck.”
The Department of Education is investigating into the matter in relation to allegations that a teacher was also responsible for the racial harassment.
In another tweet, Rashford said he was “very angry” that one of the bullies who sent him a direct message appeared to be a math teacher, adding: “He teaches children. And he knows he can racially abuse freely without consequences.”
Understandably, the account has been deleted and harassment will be reported to the police by the club.
A United spokesman said: “Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted with the hate and online harassment directed at Marcus and other players on social media.
“We have no excuse for it and we are very critical of it.
“Manchester United does not tolerate any form of discrimination or discrimination and we encourage people to report it to manutd.com.
“We also urge the media and law enforcement agencies to intensify measures to curb this disgusting practice.”
Facebook, which owns Instagram, called the harassment “disgusting”.
“We immediately removed comments and multiple accounts for violating our rules,” said a company spokesman.
“We are currently launching a new tool that, when in operation, will help prevent anyone who sees messages like this again. There is nothing that can solve this challenge overnight but we are committed to doing everything possible to protect our community from abuse.”
In April Instagram announced a tool that enables users to automatically filter bullying messages from those who don’t follow them.
England striker Rashford has previously spoken out about racial harassment.
A number of players in English football, including many of Rashford United’s teammates, have been subjected to online discrimination in recent months.
Many clubs, athletes, athletes and sporting organizations participated in a four-day strike in April to encourage companies to take stronger action against racial and sexual harassment.
