Lovecraft Country will not be renewed for a second season on HBO. From the time HBO announced its production, the TV show adaptation of Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country novel was hotly anticipated. Producers J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele worked on the show, which starred Jonathan Majors as Atticus and Jurnee Smollett as his companion Letitia. Lovecraft Country was one of the best shows of 2020, combining science fiction themes with social commentary on racism while telling a powerful story.

Because of the apparent popularity of Lovecraft Country, there has been talk of a second season. By the time Lovecraft Country’s season one finale aired in October, series creator Misha Green had already started formulating ideas for where the plot could go next.

Fans of the show assumed that a season 2 renewal would be a formality, especially given the first season left many questions unsolved. Early in 2021, Lovecraft Country season 2 was still in the works, with speculations that filming would begin later that year. That, however, will not be the case.

Lovecraft Country will not be renewed for a second season, HBO confirmed to Deadline. After much consideration, all parties engaged in the show decided that a second season would be best avoided. After only one season, the critically praised series comes to an end.

Although this will disappoint fans of Lovecraft Country, those connected with the series already have a number of other projects in the works. Tomb Raider 2, starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, is Misha Green’s feature film directorial debut.

Jonathan Majors will play Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, as well as the villain opposite Michael B. Jordan in Creed III. Meanwhile, Jurnee Smollett will next be seen in Chris Hemsworth’s Netflix action film Escape from Spiderhead.
