Netflix will make Plus/Minus alongside Wanuri Kahiu, who has been nominated for and won multiple awards for her work, continuing its tradition of partnering with award-winning directors. Natalie Reinhart (Riverdale, Chemical Hearts) will star in the film.
Kahiu’s first film, From a Whisper, won her multiple African Academy Awards, but it was her second film, Rafiki, that made her a household celebrity. Rafiki was chosen for a Cannes Film Festival screening and earned a standing ovation. Kahiu was also nominated for and received awards at other film festivals, including the Dublin International Film Festival and the Chicago International Film Festival. Aside from Plus/Minus, Kahiu is going to direct The Thing About Jellyfish, a Netflix film starring Millie Bobby Brown.
The screenplay was written by debutante screenwriter April Prosser. Jessica Malanaphy of CatchLight Studio is also a producer, and Reinhart and Alyssa Rodrigues of Screen Arcade are executive producers. Bryan Unkeless and Eric Newman of Screen Arcade, who created the highly successful Power Project with Netflix, will also produce.
According to issue 1243 of Production Weekly, production on Netflix’s Plus/Minus is planned to begin on June 14, 2021 in Austin, TX and end in mid-August 2021. For those waiting for news on The Thing About Jellyfish, this means Kahiu won’t be able to start shooting that film until until Plus/Minus is completed.
