Kohinoor Mukherjee sheds light on his journey as a sound engineer in Bollywood

Everyone loves the sound and the background score of a film but ever wondered what sound engineering is and what sound recordists generally do? They are the ones who are away from all the limelight but work extremely hard in the music industry. One of the best sound recording and mixing engineers, Kohinoor Mukherjee has been in the industry for more than a decade. He has a specialization in mixing and mastering of Bollywood songs, background music, indie albums, and fusion music. Born in Kolkata, he is based in Mumbai for his profession.

In his career span of 13 years, Mukherjee has associated with some of the best names in the industry including Anand Raj Anand, Pritam Chakraborty, Neeraj Shridhar, Sachin Gupta, Gajendra Verma, Dharam and Sandeep, Gourov-Roshin among others. The art of music has been in his genes as his mother, Raka Mukherjee was an Indian classical singer. “I was always given the exposure to the musical world and it indeed gave me happiness. But I realized sound engineering was much easier than singing,” he quoted. While pursuing his degree in MCA, Kohinoor Mukherjee got an opportunity to record Anoushka Sharma’s third studio album ‘Rise’. It was then that he realized he wanted to make his career in recording.

To follow his dreams, he moved to Mumbai in 2006 and pursued a Sound Engineering course from Daman Sood’s Digital Academy. Later, he worked with Anand Raj Anand, known for composing in films like ‘Welcome’, ‘Shootout At Wadala’ and ‘Grand Masti’. In 2008, Mr. Mukherjee crossed paths with music director Pritam and recorded a song for him. Later, he associated with Pritam and worked as a recording engineer for many Bollywood films like ‘Action Replayy’, ‘Desi Boyz’ and ‘Barfi’.

As a mixing and mastering engineer, he has worked for films like ‘Kaabil’, ‘Wajah Tum Ho’, ‘Table No. 21’, ‘Mubarakan’, ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’ and many others. Furthermore, he even stated that after the singer records a song, comes his part of mixing and mastering the tracks. It includes balancing and impacting the tone of the song. When asked about the person he would like to work with, Kohinoor Mukherjee revealed that he would love to collaborate with AR Rahman for a project.
