Hawkeye, according to Jeremy Renner, should lead the Avengers

Hawkeye should lead the next version of the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Jeremy Renner.

Renner first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Clint Barton in 2011’s Thor, in a brief appearance that introduced spectators to the archer before his return in The Avengers.

He went on to participate in three more films, the most recent of which was Avengers: Endgame. Hawkeye was left out of Avengers: Infinity War, which MCU fans weren’t happy about. Renner’s Clint Barton has primarily served as a supporting figure to the MCU’s larger heroes throughout it all. Hawkeye as leader of Avengers

Thanks to Hawkeye, Hawkeye’s tenure as a supporting figure is coming to an end. The Disney+ series provides Jeremy Renner his first main role in a Marvel Cinematic Universe project. Clint spends days building up to Christmas in New York with his family, continuing Hawkeye’s journey following Avengers: Endgame.

During this period, he meets Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), and the two of them become involved in an adventure involving a threat on par with the Avengers. Although the early reviews for Hawkeye have been overwhelmingly positive, many fans have wondered what Clint Barton’s MCU future will be after the Disney+ series concludes.

Jeremy Renner spoke to BBC Radio about the show and his MCU future as part of the promotion for Hawkeye’s Disney+ launch. The interviewer remarked how Marvel Studios has been underusing Hawkeye to this point, prompting Renner to discuss what he wants to do with the archer next.

Renner mentioned Hawkeye’s time leading the West Coast Avengers in the comics as a reason why he could step up now that Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are no longer around, and he hopes that Hawkeye becomes the next leader of the Avengers.

“I think where you mentioned the word, like, ‘under utilized.’ Well, look, he was the head of West Coast Avengers. Like, I would personally love to see him be in that sort of Captain America-leader role. Actually, which I think he would succeed in calling the shots and doing these type of things, right? Um… As a quarterback, instead of being more of a wider receiver. These type of things, right? Like, that would be really interesting, I think, to see him do.”

Hawkeye has served as a leader in the comics on multiple occasions, including with the West Coast Avengers. If Renner is still interested in playing Clint Barton, the MCU may lead him down this road.

Giving the west coast its own Avengers team would also be another method for Marvel to boost the number of superteams in the MCU. Hawkeye may also assume command of the main Avengers team or perhaps the Thunderbolts. In the comics, Barton was the leader of the Thunderbolts, and many fans had hoped that this is where his MCU journey will go.
