Good Morning Britain Host Kate Garraway Talks About Her Husband Being Admitted In Hospital

Good Morning Britain anchor Kate Garraway said said she has a “fear of the reality” of becoming her husband’s primary carer.

Derek Draper remains in hospital after being infected with Covid-19 in March 2020 and remains in critical condition.

Garraway’s year-long struggle will be screened in the ITV documentary, Finding Derek, on Tuesday evening.

I Fear The Reality

“If he needs 24-hour care I will be the primary carer. I have a fear of the reality of that life,” she says.

“It is a completely different dynamic to our relationship.”

In the documentary, she talks about the future of her family and whether their “dynamic” could change if Draper was released from hospital.

He was placed in a medically-induced coma when he was admitted to hospital at the start of the pandemic and although slowly improving, Garraway says Draper’s doctors told her he was the most seriously ill person they had seen who remained alive.

In the program, which was recorded last year, she says that although “I don’t think I ever really saw it (the situation) as quitting,” she is likely to experience it now.

What Did Kate Garraway Say?

“If I have to quit my job to take care of him, then it is best to do it now when I am earning money,” she says.

But on Tuesday at GMB, Garraway clarified: “The truth is, as I like to think I have all the answers sometimes, Derek doesn’t need me, I’m not the one who takes care of him.

“Obviously I’ll be there completely, 100% if that can make a difference but what Derek really needs is a specialist, a specialist, ongoing medical support because there’s a good chance he can improve but we need to make sure the support is there now that will happen.”

No Plan To Resign

A spokesman for Garraway said she had no plans to resign from GMB.

“In fact, her job has been something of a lifeline and really kept her spirits up over this past year and she has no plans to change that,” a spokesperson told the BBC on Tuesday.

In the documentary, Garraway is seen renovating the ground floor of their family home so it is wheelchair accessible ahead of his possible return.

The couple has a daughter, 15-year-old Darcey.
