New Zealand vs Australia, Final (N), Dubai (DSC), Nov 14 2021, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup
Innings Report: Australia were doing well till 8 overs. The toss went their way, their bowlers bowled proper Test match lines and lengths and batters were finding fielders. But Kane Williamson did know Australia only have four frontline bowlers. So he took on Mitch Marsh upon arrival and got 11 runs.
Zampa squeezed some tight overs in and Mitch Starc was totally off his usual performance today. His second over went for 19 runs, third for 22. From 6 off 13 balls, Kane raced to 51 off 32 balls to record the fastest fifty of a men’s T20 World Cup final.
The runs were leaking, thoughts of 190+ were on, but Cummins and Hazlewood bowled slow and into the wicket to arrest the flow of runs. Kane perished for a 48-ball 85, Josh finished with 3 wickets. And now we have a contest that can go either way.
Glenn Phillips: Yeah it’s a bit slow, there’s some spin and hold on it, but it’s played really nicely for us. It was about going about each over as necessary. Zamps bowled a few good overs, so it was important for us to see him off. The way Kane took Starc on was unbelievable, it turned the match around for us a little bit there. In finals you never know, but we just gotta keep our plans simple and do what we do best.

Matthew Wade: (Key to success) “Keeping things very simple. At the top of the order, you’ve probably got the best chance of scoring the most runs, try and take advantage of the powerplay and you’ve got most opportunity to face the balls. I felt in good touch, I have tried to keep things simple and play the situation.
It’s a huge blow – Jason’s a massive part of our team and a very intimidation guy to bowl at at the top of the order. We’ll miss him but it gives opportunity to other guys, we’ve got plenty of guys in our time who spend a lot of time of their career opening as well. So whoever gets that chance will be relishing that.
The consistency has been great, we’ve started very well in the powerplay whether it be Moeen Ali or Adil Rashid with spin and Chris Woakes sets the tone very well for us as well. We’ve managed to take early wickets, which in T20 cricket is a huge part of the game.”
Most runs conceded by an Australian bowler in a T20I:
64 Andrew Tye v NZ Auckland 2018
60 Mitchell Starc v NZ Dubai 2021
59 Kane Richardson v Eng Edgbaston 2018
Tim Southee: “It’s been a while since 2019, so we haven’t talked anything about it. It’s a different format for a start and a different group of guys. We are just excited to be here. You are into a tournament hoping to be here at the latter stages, hopefully we can continue the form we have shown in the previous weeks.
The experience of the guys, we were dealt with a blow early on with Lockie Ferguson ruled out. Having Adam Milne come in, hasn’t played lot of international cricket in recent years, but he’s had a good season in England playing in the Hundred and County.
It’s great to have some experience in the bowling unit. As a group, we have adapted to the conditions. All the three grounds have offered different challenges and we’ve been able to assess that.”
