In more ways than one, this year has been a great year for K-pop soloists. The great influence of members of K-pop groups on their distinctive styles has been underscored by comeback after comeback, continuous debuts, and more.
With a strong influx of solo singers finding their way into the music industry, we’ve seen more up-and-coming musicians get the doors opened for them.
EXO’s Kai and BLACKPINK’s Lisa have been at the forefront of the growth in popularity of solo music. Kai debuted as a solo artist in November 2020, with a self-titled album and the title tune “Mmmh,” which has redefined music and performance for EXO fans and casual listeners alike. The music video for ‘Mmmh’ has already surpassed 100 million views on YouTube, almost 11 months after the song and album were released. Despite the fact that it is a common EXO feat, Kai is the first member to achieve it on his own.
Meanwhile, Lisa of BLACKPINK is spreading her ‘LALISA’ fever over the globe. Not shying away from its celebrity, the Thai singer’s single album has ranked high on global charts for weeks since its debut on September 10. Lisa has now become the first female K-pop singer to stay on the UK Official Singles Chart for four weeks in a row, claiming her influence on the chart.
The b-side track ‘MONEY’ debuted at No. 81 and climbed to No. 54 last week. It has moved 8 ranks to No. 46 on the UK Official Singles Chart this week.
