Drew Barrymore Tells Andy Cohen She’s “Never Forgiven” Herself for Drinking Too Much on WWHL

Drew Barrymore is coming clean on “The Drew Barrymore Show.” Drew has been in the spotlight practically her whole life, and with fame comes navigating the occasional celebrity interview.

“I drank too much and I have never forgiven myself”

Drew and Andy Cohen sat down for “The Art of the Interview” segment of her new daytime talk show. In the series, Drew sits down with other notable hosts who she admires and gets their take on hosting, interviewing and what it takes to have a hit show. Her conversation with Andy was no different.

The Never Been Kissed actress even shared one of her biggest regrets from her time on his hit Bravo show, “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

Drew remarked that she’s always been a total pro when it comes to work. Except for that one time when she lost control on WWHL. The actress offered her guest an apology for her behavior during an appearance on his hit talk show back in 2018. Drew confessed, “It was on your show, and I drank too much and I have never forgiven myself, nor will I ever forgive myself,” she says.

“I’m an imperfect person, and I tout that”

Barrymore last appeared on Watch What Happens Live over two years ago with her Santa Clarita Diet co-star, Timothy Olyphant. At the time, some fans caught on to Drew’s behaviour, noting that Barrymore was slurring on camera.

But Drew owns up to it, admitting that she’s learned to embrace her missteps. And that includes knowing when to acknowledge them.

“I’m an imperfect person, and I tout that, and I’ve had that liberty since I was a kid because it was all out there,” she says. “And it was either boo hoo about it or say, ‘God, it’s sort of redeeming to not have to pretend to be perfect.’ But I really want to apologize to you because I really…I just, I will never let that happen again. I’m so sorry.”

“You’re in a great club of people”

As apologetic as his former guest was, Cohen wasn’t phased at all by the incident. In fact, he even went ahead and reassured her that she’s not the first guest to have one too many drinks on his show.

“I’m used to people being overserved on my show, and so I don’t even really have a totally clear memory of it. But you don’t need to apologize to me for being overserved on my show, that happens,” he says. “You’re in a great club of people.”

“What you have done is my favorite thing in the world”

She also didn’t shy away from praising the hosts incredible versatility as an interviewer. “You have every kind of person on your show,” Drew gushed. “Everyone has come to play from Meryl Streep to Oprah and you have to be the UN ambassador with the greatest skill set in your reunions. What you have done is my favorite thing in the world, you have mixed tones.”

Ever so modest, Andy revealed that he’s always tried to strike a balance. He shared, “I love you for getting that because I am all about high and low and that is my entire goal in everything that I’m doing.”

“It’s not that I’m this militant person of clarity and presence”

Barrymore, who has been open about her past struggles and overcoming her substance abuse issues, has previously said she isn’t “militant” about her lifestyle.

“I drink, I enjoy my life and get out of my own head,” she said during an interview on Netflix’s Norm Macdonald Has a Show in 2018. “It’s not that I’m this militant person of clarity and presence, but [cocaine] literally seems like my worst nightmare right now.”

The Drew Barrymore Show is just around the corner

The actress is preparing to step into her new role as daytime host of a one-hour nationally syndicated daytime show. Produced and distributed by CBS Television Distribution and filmed in New York City. In “The Art of the Interview,” she sits down for one-on-one in-depth conversations with hosts who inspire her including Cohen, Gayle King, Jimmy Fallon, Whoopi Goldberg and Sean Evans.

According to its official description, The Drew Barrymore Show is “optimism TV. Bringing information, inspiration, and entertainment to the daytime audience … celebrating every part of humanity along the way.”

The Drew Barrymore Show premieres on September 14.
