Day Two: Johnny Depp Vs Amber Heard

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s case has kept everyone on the edge and just like we assumed it is nothing less than a blockbuster.

Johnny sued The Sun newspaper for an article posted calling him a ‘wife-beater’. The tabloid’s publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN) and its executive editor Dan Wootton, are being sued. In the article, they also mentioned that there was “overwhelming evidence” that he attacked his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Johnny Depp has denied claims of abusing Amber strenuously.

David Sherborne, Depp’s barrister, said that the article made defamatory allegations of the utmost seriousness” against Depp. In the article, Depp is being accused of committing serious assaults on Heard. It also claims that the injuries were so serious that she feared for her life. Sherborne said: “The articles amount to a full-scale attack on the claimant as a ‘wife beater’, guilty of the most horrendous physical abuse.”

The actor stood on the witness box again to provide evidence. On being cross-examined by NGN’s lead counsel Sasha Wass QC, Depp appeared often adding humor to his answers. He was questioned about wide-ranging series of topics. 

On the second day, Sasha read out multiple texts sent by him. Court heard Depp joked he was going to leave a poo outside his ex-wife Amber Heard’s door. For her to step in, “thinking it was one of the dogs'”.

Sasha questioned him about one of his jokes with his former assistant Stephen Deuters in 2013. She said the joke is about him squatting in the master bedroom and leaving a master coil of dookie so Amber steps in it thinking one of the dogs has a major problem. Depp explained that it was an example of his ‘childish’ sense of humor.

His claims come after he stated that he thought of ending his marriage when he discovered poo in their marital bed. Depp’s legal team clarified that he thought of ending his marriage because of Amber and her friends’ behaviour after a party in his flat on April 2016.

It included one of them defacating on the bed and Amber blaming it on the tiny dog. Depp addressed the statement saying Heard told their building manager the poo incident was a “harmless prank”. He said that it means she acknowledged being responsible after claiming that it was the dog’s fault.

Depp explained that the Yorkshire Teacup terriers were too small to clamber onto the bed and leave such a large deposit there. He joked about putting one of the dog’s pistols in a microwave after consuming cocaine. Depp admitted it was a running joke and denied the claims that he dangled the animal outside his car window.

Depp had also joked about f—–g Amber’s corpse after burning her to make sure she is dead. It was a part of a text exchange with fellow actor Paul Bettany. Sasha read it out and in the message from Bettany, Amber was called a witch and it also suggested burning her. Depp’s message responded: “Let’s drown her before burning her. I will f**k her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she is dead.”

Depp said he was close friends with Bettany and he knew about details in his relationship. He further said that the actor knew when alcohol and cocaine came into picture, Amber didn’t like him. Depp also added that Amber and Bettany had their differences and were not a fan of each other.

In another part, the court were shown pictures of Depp lying on the ground allegedly unconcious. Sasha suggested he had passed out while Depp corrected her that he was asleep. In the picture, a fully clothed Depp was laid down next to the bed with his head resting on an object on the floor.

Sasha pointed out there is a bed and Depp is lying on the floor, fully clothed with his head in an odd angle. Depp said his head was on a cushion to which Sasha said it looks more like an object than a cushion.

Sasha further showed the pictures taken on 18 July 2018. A picture of lines of cocaine was showed to the court. Sasha said it is Depp on that date and around that time she says he was in rehab for five days. Depp explained saying no one can go to rehab for five days. He said one can only detox for five days while rehab takes six months. So she further asked him if he detoxed on July 2013 to which Depp agreed.

Depp said Rolling Stones star Keith Richards recommended a rehab clinic to him. So he was questioned if he wanted to make things work with Amber and clean up. Depp agreed and said he wanted to at the time.

He continues to deny all the claims of assault made by Amber and claims that she abused him in their marriage. NGN defended Amber based on her 14 allegations of abuse on Depp. The case will continue with day three of Depp’s testimony.
