Charlize Thereon ‘heartbroken’ about Furiosa recasting

Charlize Theron is quite upset about being replaced by a younger actress in the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel film. Imperator Furiosa was famously portrayed by Charlize Theron in the popular 2015 action flick. However, director George Miller plans to explore the life of a young Furiosa, and hence has decided to recast the role with an actor in her twenties.

“It’s a little heartbreaking”

“It’s a tough one to swallow,” she said. “Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making Fury Road with him. He’s a master, and I wish him nothing but the best.

Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character [Furiosa], and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly.”

The young Furiosa has not yet been cast, but Split star Anya Taylor-Joy and Killing Eve actress, Jodie Comer are being eyed to take on the role.

Furiosa’s backstory

Miller confirmed that he’s casting a Furiosa prequel and he hopes to make it after he finishes up his drama Three Thousand Years of Longing. The concept of Furiosa is based on a backstory he and Fury Road co-writer Nick Lathouris conceived to help Theron fully realize the character in the first film. The duo have done the same for all the other main characters as well. Miller spoke about Furiosa’s life in the Green Place. How she was picked out from the Vuvalini clan of warriors, and how she became the henchman of Immortan Joe.

Charlize is quite fond of the idea. “Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if [Miller] feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner,” Theron continued.

CGI technology?

The director previously said that he even considered using technology to de-age Charlize for the prequel role. However, he ultimately decided against it, noting the valiant but ultimately distracting CGI used in The Irishman.

Charlize went on to point out how casting doesn’t necessarily have to stay faithful to the character. Indirectly implying that she believes she could have been right for the prequel.

“The emotional impact of the story isn’t lost”

“I feel like storytelling, on many levels, is really pushing the envelope. We’re seeing shows like Chernobyl, a quintessential Russian story, and you have British actors playing all of these historical Russian characters.

There’s something refreshing about it. The emotional impact of the story isn’t lost. We get so hung up on the smaller details. We forget the thing that we emotionally tap into has nothing to do with that minute thing that we’re focusing on.”

Just because we won’t see Charlize in the prequel, doesn’t mean we won’t be able to see her kick ass onscreen again. Fans can catch Charlize in her new action-fantasy film, The Old Guard, which is set to release on Netflix on July 10.
