Cate Blanchett confirmed as lead role in “Borderlands” movie

Cate Blanchett is officially set to play the lead role in the movie adaptation of the popular video game “Borderlands”. Blanchett will be reunited with the House With a Clock in Its Walls director Eli Roth. Lionsgate confirmed rumours and announced their deal on Thursday.

The 2009 role-playing, shooter game narrates the story of a group of intergalactic mercenaries on the world of Pandora. They are searching for a vault of alien technology, battling indigenous creatures and scavengers on the planet.

Cate Blanchett will be portraying the lead role of Lilith, a legendary thief equipped with magical skills. She is a “siren,” and one of the few of her kind living on Pandora. While she was only playable in the first game, she is an integral character throughout the Borderlands series.

The Borderlands movie is going to be directed by Eli Roth. Craig Mazin (creator of TV series Chernobyl) will be handling the movie’s script. Avi Arad and Ari Arad will be producing alongside Erik Feig.

“Blanchett is a director’s dream to work with”

Roth who considers Blanchett to be a ‘director’s dream to work with’ was all but praise for the actress. He said, “I’m so lucky to have the amazing Cate Blanchett starring in ‘Borderlands.’ We had the most incredible collaboration together on ‘The House With a Clock in Its Walls,’ and I believe there’s nothing she can’t do. From drama to comedy and now action, Cate makes every scene sing.” Roth seems visibly excited to be working with the actress again. “Everyone brings their A-game to work with Cate”, the director said. “I know together we’re going to create another iconic character in her already storied career.”

The popular action game isn’t the only reason why the movie might be a blockbuster. The actress will definitely be bringing something more to the table as the lead role. Cate Blanchett is a critically acclaimed actress who has appeared in dozens of films over the past three decades. She is seen in quite a few fan favourite franchises such as The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. Her role as Hela in Thor: Ragnarok was globally loved by fans, not leaving out her exceptional role in Elizabeth. She’s also a proud two time Oscar winning actress. She received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Aviator and the Academy Award for Best Actress for Blue Jasmine.

News of the film’s adaptation first came out way back in 2015, but things only started working out as soon as Roth took hold of the reins. Cate Blanchett’s confirmation as the lead role is surely something to watch out for.
