Captain Marvel 2 Set To Tackle Tough Subjects

Nia DaCosta, the director of the upcoming Captain Marvel 2/ The Marvels, has revealed that the movie will be tackling some tough subjects. The upcoming movie is the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel. It will feature Brie Larson reprising her role as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel.

The movie will also include familiar faces like Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, and Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo. This will be in addition to the newcomer, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan aka Ms Marvel.

Nia has already making MCU history as she is the first and the youngest Black woman to direct a Marvel movie. Her other project, Candyman, is hitting theatres on August 27th after more than a year’s worth of delays. Nia’s version of the Candyman is already set to tackle the history of racist violence that is committed against the Black Community.

The director revealed while speaking with Variety, that similar to her upcoming Candyman, The Marvels will also tackle tough subjects. Marvel movies are known for their lighthearted nature but Nia wants to make sure some serious conversations are imbibed in all her movies.

She said,

“I can say it’s a very different beast. But I am obsessed with how we all deal with our pain and trauma, and there’s some of that in the story.”

The filming for Captain Marvel 2 has already begun earlier this month. And the MCU movie is set to release in 2022 as part of Phase 4. However, because of the increasing threat of the COVID-19 Delta variant, studios have begun postponing their theatrical debuts. Sony became the first studio to delay the premiere of their highly anticipated, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. They pushed it back from September 24th to October 15th.

The hopes for Marvel Studios are high as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings have just conducted their premiere on August 16th. However, theatres can shut whenever because of the ongoing pandemic. As for Captain Marvel 2, there is a lot of potential for the movie; as WandaVision’s breakout superhero, Monica Rambeau is set to play an important role in the movie.

Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel will also play a significant character in the movie after her own Disney+ series. Brie had described the movie as “juicy”; so it will be interesting to know what Nia has planned; when she says the movie will tackle tough, but important subjects.
